Newbie needs some advice...
    #575132 - 03/10/02 05:49 PM (15 years, 8 months ago)

Hi,

I mixed up some substrate & lightly packed it into drinking glasses with foil over the top. I don't have a pressure cooker so I steamed them in a big pot for two hours. After they cooled I took them out and noticed that the substrate seems to have expanded so it's almost filling the entire jar, no little air-holes of anything. Does this matter? I used 100% organic flour and vermiculite to make the substrate, adding enough water so it was cookie-dough consistency.

Another thing:- how do I keep the jars warm once innoculated? I know the temperature should be around 21 degrees celcius for the mycelium to grow. How do I keep this temperate constant all night and day?

I'm going to be using a wild spore print to innoculate, so I expect a very low success rate (would be happy with even one jar). If anybody wants to trade wild aussie Psilocybe cubensis spores, drop me a PM. I'll trade 2 for 1 seeings as though mine will be wild. A donation would be even better.

It should be more like 27?C.

Oh thanks.

So I guess the expanded jars are okay? I made up some more and none of the other expanded in the same way so it's not big deal, just wondering if I should even bother innoculating them?

Your substrate shouldn't be like cookie dough, it should be more like wet sand that is crumbly.

Use this recipe:

2 parts verm
1 part brown rice flour
1 part water

And don't 'pack it in'. Just fill it loosely.

For heating, do you have a small back room that you can dedicate to your hobby? Just keep the heat up in that room OR get an aquarium. Make sure it has the aqarium lights. Cut a piece of cardboard to size to seal the top, the lightwill keep the temp about 10 degrees warmer inside and if your house is basic room temp of about 72, then this works perfect.

I have a filter patch bag with the aforementioned "cookie dough" substrate. It has surface growth, but is stalled.

Should I...

A: Wait forever for colonization or until comtaminated
B: Toss it
C: Birth it early to give it air and dry it out

--------------------

The proof is in the pudding.
