Trubble with 1/2 pint regular kerr jars...
    #5751075 - 06/14/06 08:33 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

For the first few jars (going onto a little over 2 weeks), I decided to use kerr 1/2 pint regular-mouth because they were free, and I wanted a basis of comparison for the kerr 1/2 pint wide-mouth. For those who don't know what the regular-mouth jars look like, they are about twice as tall as the wide-mouth and about 3/4 the diameter.

(In the regular-mouth jars) There is 0% contamination, which I am happy about, but the mycelium really slows down as it reaches the bottom centimeter of the jar. Is this due to CO2 buildup? Should they be turned upside-down to empty the gas out or something?

Also, the mycelium at the original inoculation points isn't as bright-white as the new growth. Is this normal? Are the nutrients or H2O depleted? I would hate to ditch my firstborn...

The wide-mouth jars do very well, though, and seem to promote quick, consistent growth. USE KERR WIDE-MOUTH!!!

Anyways, your help is appreciated. Peace.

I would definitely turn the stalled jars upside down and remove the tape if you haven't already. Personally, I've never noticed a difference between wide or regular mouth as far as speed is concerned.
