    #5749494 - 06/14/06 12:15 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Just got home from health food store, 5lbs. rye grain in hand. Started pouring in qt. jars to prep for 24 hrs. when I noticed maybe 30 or so totally, black kernels. There hard as the other grain kernels, my question is, can Ileave them in or should i remove them, 1 at a time..ccdove.

Those are ergot sclerotia. I doubt they will do any harm and might add useful precursors.

A certain minimal amount is allowed in grain, but I wouldn't pick out a handful and eat them. I am sure you can find plenty of horror stories online about ergot poisoning.
