Geolite alternatives

Geolite has proven to be extremely difficult to come by in this city. Most hydroponics shops around town haven't even heard of it. Can anyone suggest a good alternative? I'd use perlite, but I can see it making a enormous mess in a poorman’s pod.

hydroton, grow rocks, hydrokorrels, geolite are all terms and manufacturer names of the same thing. try getting your hands on silica stone, or dynarock II, and if you cant get that the next best thing would be fine or small grade lavarock. all growrocks are is man made lava rock (heat expanded clay pellets) i personally have much better luck with perlite, it seems easier to sanitize and re-use.(for me anyways)

or simply perlite put a few spacers in there then when you put trays down it doesn't tick to the bottom. sure its messy to work with thus i don't work with it. it just sit there in the tub i use for small to medium casings when i don't have a mono tub going.

How effective are lava rocks when compared to geolite? They don't stifle the air stones or anything?

I use lava rocks, they work just fine
However, a friend uses geolite rocks (got them off the internet for like 20$, decent amount to) and his IMO, are better.
Simply because you can level them out WAY easier than lava rocks. Lava rocks are all mis-shapen whereas lava rocks are round and level off way better.

L.E.C.A. is the family name for it. You can use lava rock(I do) just rinse it alot, till the water runs clear. If you are using a heater in yours make sure it is either unbreakable or has a sheath to protect it(lava rock is heavy). GL

Alright, thanks for all the help guys, this board is awesome!
I'll pick up some lava rocks, as they are the cheaper alternative, and I'll figure out how to make a sheath, I'm thinking one of those super stiff "Nalgene" bottles cut down the middle from top to bottom to make a little half circle tent. May sound a little hefty, but the last thing I want is to save money on rocks and end up crushing my expensive heater.

Sounds good to me, if you can not find smaller ones(lava rocks) you can use a hammer to break them up a bit to be more level, do this before the rinse or you have to rinse twice. GL with your studies

call around to the concrete companies and ask if they have the expanded clay agregate, when I was doing restoration it was $120/ton, they'd likely give you a couple buckts full for nothing
