this is strange i was sitting here browing the shroomery the i used the "jump to box" and it said "www.shroomery.org cannot be found. Please check the settingings and try again"
i figured it was just the shroomery then i couldn't get google or anything else
i figured qwest took a shit for a minute
i tried to ping somthing ~ $ ping www.google.com ping: unknown host www.google.com
so i tryed to ping the router ~ $ ping 192.168.1.1 PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.09 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.742 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.735 ms
--- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 3 received, 0% packet loss, time 2005ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.735/0.858/1.098/0.171 ms
my comp is ok
so i try to ping the modem ~ $ ping 192.168.0.1 PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=254 time=1.91 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.0.1: icmp_seq=2 ttl=254 time=1.88 ms
--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics --- 2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1002ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 1.882/1.899/1.917/0.046 ms
router is ok
later i checked back and nothing i clicked a .pls i had saved in my firefox bookmarks and it worked. http://www.di.fm/mp3/progressive.pls i could stream music.
so i went to the firefox settings and enabled the last proxy i had set to use, just to see if it works and it does. i can use this proxy out of mexico to browse the internet thats how im posting this but a direct connection doesnt work.
im realy lost now i have no idea what to try next It has to be the internet provider, right?!?! should i call them up, and see whats going on?
thanks for any help

Almost 100% certain that it was a DNS issue based upon your description. Going through a proxy would have forced the proxy to use it's DNS server rather than your ISP's DNS server. A few sites that were still cached by your local resolver would also continue to work for a while... assuming you don't use a brain dead OS... and anything that you can access by IP address, rather than name, would have worked as well.
Also, a quick lesson... just because you can ping your router does not mean that your router is working. The return pong only tells you that the network physical layer seems to be working and that the router is responding to ICMP echo requests properly on at least one interface. Ping is always a good test to run to help rule out a physical problem with the network, such as a broken wire, but it should never be used as proof that anything above the physical layer (in the OSI model) is working properly.
