finding cash

My dad found a 20 with a bunch of what he thought were ones beneath it sitting at the checkout counter in a convenience store. The cashier wasn't going for it so he pocketed it. Later on down the road he found it to be 1820 dollars.
I thought about it and couldn't really think of a good way to truly insure the owner was reimbursed. I know they must be hurting. Damn. Not that I really care to hear karma has its way of getting even, but just wondering how others would handle the situation.

I doubt that someone in need (my guess) of that cash would be so careless as to leave it like that in a convenience store. If they were that careless the cash will not do them much good in the long run. People like that aren't often fit to survive for long. (not necessarily a personal judgement but based on survival of the fittest) The lesson might be more valuable then the cash if they were inclined to learn.
I have found money and sometimes returned it and sometimes not. You can set your own criteria for it.
My guess is the money belonged to a drug dealer or pimp.

with that amount of cash, i'd report it to the police.
i once found 60$ cash on the ground, and called the police to ask if anybody reported losing it.... they came, took the money from me, and disappeared. 1 year later, i got a phone call that they would send somebody by to return the found goods.
nothing really beats having a cop ring your doorbell with a wad of 20s in his hand asking "uh, is xxxxx here?"
heh.
so moral of the story is that if you want to deal with the police, you will have to give up the cash for a period of time- also with the amount being rather significant, they may have a different protocol that may include holding it longer or permanently.
upon second thought though, chances are that it was the store's money, and your pops may have committed a theft without even knowing it. something to consider before calling the cops

When we were kids we found I think it was $ 28 in a hole in the asphalt in the parking lot of a bowling alley with no one around. We thought we were RICH! $ 14 each bought a lot of Bazooka bubble gum and Topps baseball cards in those days...
As for the convenience store incident, did you know they have security cameras in those places now and might be able to determine who left the money and perhaps more importantly identify who removed it. That's a lot of $$. Hope it wasn't mafia drug money...

Especially when the house reeks of pot smoke. I don't really like cops comming to my house.

Ice, I thought you don't smoke pot that often ?
In general, money is considered like property. It is the same if you find almost 2000 dollars and keep them as you find an (old) cadillac, worth that prize and use it as your own property.
Native folks had and sometimes still have a totally different view of property. If they find something, they use it, but then, they leave it for another one later again. Perhaps that is not possible with money, but perhaps use 10% of it (the official reward) and then leave it again somewhere, to let destiny decide, who will be next in the game. That would be more fun, than the lawful game, perhaps.
Just an idea. But to be on the safe side, bring it to the police and if they are honest, you will get your official reward minimum, if not more.

When I was a child, I found 5 bucks on the floor at a store. My mom made me turn it in. A week later i went to the person that I turned it in to, and she new nothing about it. From then on, I always put it in my pocket and say nothin'. If it obviously belongs to someone, or if someone shows up looking for it, then I would return it. But that kind of cash? Just laying there? Whoever it belonged to should lose it just for being careless. Nice find!! Peace

Simple. Call the store manager and tell them that you have "something" someone left behind on their counter. If they come around looking for it they can call you. If they can tell you exactly what it was and how much, you have the rightful owner. Return it to them. When you call, do not tell the manager it was money. For all he knows, you found someones Keys or Drivers License.
They may say someone came looking for a wad of cash and left their number. You can call them too if that's the case.

About 3 years ago, my manager and I found $3000 lying on the floor in the store, all 100's. There were never cameras installed in the store, so that method is out. We held the money for a week and not a single person ever came in or called asking about missing money. In the end, we each came out $1500 better off, monetarily.

Best course of action, I would have to think. Otherwise, if they do come looking for it, and find that you have simply pocketed and made no attempt to make it available to its rightful owner... you know where you go.
Personally, I'm mostly inclined to agree with Icelander, however. No one leaves that kind of cash around on the counter of a convience store. I know that is just enough for the expensive ass Ibanez Universe guitar I want....
 Peace.

I would think the Law Dog of Wal-Mart would know exactly what the required procedure and applicable statutes are given the situation.

Bah, I'm not in any way adversed in such. I see a guy in my department stealing shit, I'm going to make sure it is dealt with. In an altogether real sense, he is stealing my money.
Peace.
