someone plz take a look at these 2 casings (pics included)

So I'm getting pretty pissed off. The 2 mini bulk casings I have are totally not progressing at a similar rate. I was mentioning it yesterday in another post/thread how I have a PESA casing which is totally working out fine, and then the cambo which isnt working out as fine. FOr the cambo the surface of the casing is still mostly uncolonized except around the edges a tiny bit. I thought maybe its just coming through slowly so I poked around very carefully under the surface. I went down all the way trhough the casing layer in like 2 or 3 places and its completely untouched. Just moist soil like the day I layed it down.

the cambo casing

as opposed to the PESA casing (which I patched and placed in the FC a couple days ago)

I dunno if it's just me but I'm noticing similar behaviour in my cambo mono-tub. The myc comes through in certain areas but for the most part doesnt even start growing into the casing layer. Whats up with that. In the case of my mono-tub I figured the casing mix was the problem cause it was this really heavy, clayish cactus soil...but the stupid cambo casing (shown above) is doing the same shit (and this one has the same casing mix as the PESA casing, which isnt the cactus soil I mentioned earlier)

Is the Cambo just harder to grow in general? Is it much more picky about the conditions than the other strain?

you used potting soil for your casing layer?

the only kind of soil you can use is jiffy mix, and all that is, is a pre mixed 50/50+.

Next time tr 50/50+ or 60/40

Well, sorta ya. Its a long story which Ive had to explain often...but basically I have no access whatsoever to vermiculite where i live, so the 50/50+ is a no go.

Didn't wanna use straight peat cause then I'd have to buy a bail of it, and honestly I was trying to keep the spendings on this little project to a bare minimum (and ya I'm awake that if I skimp on the supplies Ill get less than optimal results...thats something I can deal with no problem). Also I had no more coir and didn't wanna go to the growshop to get another 50liter bag of it.

Tried that cactus mix, that just didnt seem to work at all. So fuck that stuff. Then I was told that you could use a peat based potting soil and manage with that. Its seedling soil, so no nutes in there (or barely any). The composition is about 60-70% peat I believe, its got some sand in it for drainage, and also has calcium carbonate added (for the pH I guess?) which it says on the bag is in the 6.5-7 range. I mixed in a bit of perlite I had lying around to make it a bit airier/fluffier. The PESA seems to like it alright I'm thinking....

So no one has any idea what could be wrong here? Why is the PESA casing doing alright whilst the other one isn't really progressing at all (e.g. I can poke all the way through the casing layer and its still just untouched soil)

Also why is it that both my attempts with cambodians failed in the same manner...meaning a few white spots appeared on the surface of the casing but mostly nothing happened at all. These were two seperate incidents which involved different casing mixes (neither of which were optimal, but whatever.....) so I can't neccesarily attribute it to an improper casing mix at this point.

One thing to note.....the jars of cambodian that I used to start these projects started getting that yellow metabolic byproduct stuff forming quite soon after being fully colonized. I would say just about all the jars I used had yellowing to a certain extent (not all over the place, but enough of it for me to have been worried and ask about it here). I remember before I put the trash bags around the shoeboxes I used for the casings pictured above...the box of cambodian had quite big yellow stains on the sides. Didn't look very nice at all, but I was informed on the shroomery that you can still fruit them even if they are doing this and it shouldn't be a problem. Could this be my problem??

The yellow stuff is a metabolic byproduct that could be an indicator you have a bacterial problem.  The myc might be focusing its energy on warding off contamination rather than colonizing the casing layer.  Any wierd smells?

I agree there's no problem with your casing, not optimal, but not a deal breaker either.  I've used unsterilized handfuls of dirt I stole from a potted plant before and still managed a contam free pinset, you can get away with a lot more than people give credit for

But anyway, if your cambos did it to you last time, and is doing it now, I think an easy solution is to stop working with them.  I don't think "all" cambos are hard to work with, in fact they're not... you could just be working from a bogus/unlucky substrain, did all your problem ones come from the same print/syringe?  If you're set on working with them maybe get a fresh print from a different source.

I'm aware of the metabolic byproducts being a sign of bacterial presence, but I was also told by RogerRabbit (if I remember correctly) that jars showing the byproducts can still be used to spawn to bulk or case directly, but should not be used for G2G stransfers. So I went with that.

And ya it was one original syringe of Cambodian. I did multi spore inoculation with a few jars and then started an LC which Ive been working from since.

Granted the casing pictured above which isn't working was showing severe yellow stains on the side of the shoebox so maybe that one was overly infected or smth....but well, I couldn't say if its the same thing with the cambo mono-tub I tried, cause I cant look through the sides there. Its a possibility though..

Would it be further possible that maybe the cambodians are just more susceptible to a certain bacterial presense and have more problems warding them off then the PESA? WOuld be a pity actually cause seriously the cambodians colonize FAST compared to the PESA...
