Hunting in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia

Hey, I'm new to the shroomery, and have joined to see if anyone is interested in helping me create a map of Tasmania with as many sites as possible where identified species are situated. I have been happily hunting for about 2 years now and have found some nice hunting grounds in the Hobart area, and i know of a couple in the north of the state as well. I am going to be living in Tasmania for the next 2 years, so if anyone would like to contribute, just let me know via this thread. P.s. A good weekend is a weekend that i have been hunting.
Please add your Hunting experiences in Tasmania to this thread.

Heya, I know of 3 confirmed species down here.
Psilocybe semilanceata (Liberty Cap) Psilocybe subaeruginosa (Locally called Gold Top) Copelandia Cyanescens (Blue Meanie)
Mainly I have just gathered gold tops in old cattle grazing areas between the seasons of may and june, when it becomes very wet these mushrooms go bezerk.

I thought gold tops were Psilocybe cubensis? Psilocybe subaeruginosa doesn't grow where cattle graze, it grows in wood chips. :/

People call anything gold tops. Ive heard subs, cubensis and cyans all referred to as gold tops. Ive also heard them all referred to as blue meanies. Some people just dont get it.

i've never seen copelandia cyanescens here, but can personally confirm the other two.

Lots of people never had access to literature or the internet till the last decade, so there was, and still is, a lot of colloquial knowledge out there. I've been guilty of the confusion of naming myself.
but there are a lot of chinese whispers. You wouldnt believe some of the stories i have heard.

They dont just grow on wood chips, they are adventitious, and will grow on leaf matter and rotting bark, and they love bracken fern. they are also multispecies saprophytes , so not just pine and eucalypt but also tea tree and a few other species.
I have seen them growing in numerous places, parks, forests, paddocks, school playgrounds, amongst the bamboo at the university cafetteria, at the beach even!
All good fun.
Cheers, Obtuse.

Cattle don't graze on leaf matter or rotting bark, though. They graze on big green rolling field of grass.

Here in australia, we use a combination of forest and wire fences to make our paddocks, and we usually keep quite a few trees around in order to give the cattle shade from our strong australian sun.
you can walk along the edges of the paddocks, and then amongst the trees and be relatively successfully, especially as i mentioed if bracken are also present.
unused paddocks are better, but always having worth having a walk around.
cheers, Obtuse.

I still think he meant cubes. It's the most logical conclusion.

They are a tropical species. They do NOT grow in Tasmania. You have to go quite a way northwards on the Australian continent before you will encounter Panaeolus cyanescens.
[EDIT] D'oh. Just saw the age of this thread.

Hey Crococonnor, I’m new to shrooms and hunting here in Tassie. Despite the age of the post I’m replying to, are you still in the community and any advice for a newb to engage with and enter into the local Shroom community.
Would be keen for a hunt during the upcoming season
Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻

Hello PhoenixMan.
Don't like the chances of a reply from Crococonnor.
What I would suggest is to keep an eye out for the "Tassie 2023 Actives thread" that should appear in the next month or so. You'll be able to ask fellow Tassie hunters any questions you may have then. Just keep checking in Mushrooms, Mycology and Psychedelics > Mushroom Hunting and Identification.
The one thing you can start with is to study up on Psilocybe subaeruginosa (what most find in Tasmainia), and to start going though older threads from Tassie, Victoria and read every post and look at each image and read for any helpful tips to expand your knowledge of what you'll be looking for.

Hi guys.
I am also very new to this and was hoping to learn more.
I’ll attach a few photos, these photos were taken from a walk in tassie.
If anyone could give any information as to what I am looking that would be fantastic!
