It's the other way around.
-------------------- Dreaming of that face again.
It's bright and blue and shimmering.
Grinning wide
And comforting me with its three warm and wild eyes.
On my back and tumbling
Down that hole and back again
Rising up
And wiping the webs and the dew from my withered eye.

Copes when fresh are anywhere from three to ten times more potent than cubes.
mj
Cubes take a fresh ounce of mushrooms or from three to five dried grams.
Copes when fresh take 7-10 medium shrooms and they can weigh 3-5 grams fresh and fry someone. Dried copes take from 1-2 grams dried. They lose much in potency form improper drying and handling.

Hey MJ, what do you consider the best method for drying mushrooms and retaining their potency at the same time??
I've read much controversy regarding methods for dry storage of mushrooms... what about freezing?

I have heard that freezing the shrooms ruptures cell membranes and therefore the psilocybin and psilocin oxidizes. As for drying, I swear by calcium chloride, which can be purchased for very cheap at your auto parts store as de-icer.

Don't freeze fresh mushrooms. When you freeze anything, the water crystalizes. When water crystalizes it ruptures cells like crazy. When the mushrooms thaw out, the cells will all be destoyed and they wil turn into a gooey paste.
The way I've always dried mushrooms: Fan dry for a few hours, then stick them in a desiccant chamber. A desiccant chamber will get them cracker dry, then you can stick them in the freezer.
If the mushrooms are super meaty, like Gymnopilis, cut them up into smaller fragments first.

Is it even necessary to throw them in the freezer once they are cracker dry?? Seems that would be adequate for preservation without freezing. Thanks for the tips Gumby

The freezer's not necessary, but it won't hurt after drying. I keep mine in a jar filled with co2 in a refridgerator. They'll keep for a very long time. I like to use a dehydrator too, which raises my curiosity when it comes to copes

I just typed this and it disappeared so I am not in the mood to retype it. Do not freeze your shrooms.
A single collection of liberty caps from London collected in 1851 were chemically analysed and in a test of comparative analysis they were compared to a chemically analysed collection of liberty caps collected in Oregon in 1977. Both were of the same equal similar potencty.
As for drying, I typed it in and it disappeared so got to the Shroomery's Ultimate Shroom Guide for my drying method.
I have used that for thirty years. I do this with edibles.
The only shrooms I had problems with drying were Amanita muscaria. They smell.
Some times I have had problems with cubes in hot weather locales such as Florida, Thailand, Malaysia, India, Nepal, Java and Bali, Have no0 [problem with drying copes. Copes when dry are usually 1 gram dried potency shrooms. They do lose much in drying but can be handled carefully when picking and not squeezed in their stems. This is easy as the years go by
Anyway,
its up to you. Most people do not have any collections long enough to save them for later use. Or many have dried shrooms for a few months and then need more.
In the past, I actually have had some shrooms I kept for 11 years. But I no longer keep for my self. They all go to herbariums for study for others to follow up onmy research.

Great advice, I know how infuriating it is when the internet messes up and deletes a long post you just finished.... I get so mad. I will check out the shroomerys ultimate shroom guide, thanks!

There is some scientific fact that copes are stronger. BUT, I have eaten alot of both and copes tend to very dramatically in potency, dry or wet. Cubes ,IMO, are more reliable on the dry side.

There are also alot of inexpensive vacume container type systems like at Wal Mart etc. which might aid after drying......vacume works well in the food industry for long term storage.....those home systems can work well also for maintainig that 'just opened' aroma for coffee once opened.
after losing couple long typed things as I am Type challenged been slowly forcing myself to use Notepad w/ Copy/ Paste.
Mushroom potencies can vary greatly from collection to collection for varying reasons and besides averages would be possible come across a Cube more macho than a Cope here and there.
