You know Pac I thought the same thing. What made me look up scale is how it looked like little islands. I did find some lichens that look almost like it but it was all connected. I came back like 4 times to look over his pics before I switched to scale.

your right lichen it just has been exposed to too much sun so it died. no scale. did you know all lichen is edible but most undigestiable.

scale can get to 1/2 inch, I'm inclined to believe it's a scale as opposed to a
lichen, that certainly doesnt look like any lichen I've ever seen

1/2 inch scale would be magnolia scale. and it doesnt resemble magnolia scale. but after looking at it closer it could very well be scale guess that what i get for not looking at the pic full size. if its scale its definetly armored. pluck them off they are definetly immobile at that point. i must have also had a little buzz when i posted because i dont remember the red when squished part. the scale i have seen dont bleed red though. if the fig tree is that important to you hit it with some insecticides so it doesnt get worse. spraying with a alchol solution should kill them but dont over do it.

You know I still believe that these are leaches, but how easy it is to change your mind? Like changing a Christian to Buddhism.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_insect

There is a picture of one type of scale on this page that looks very similar to the pictures you posted.

edit: the structures seem to be similar, especially the division, one dot in the center, with a series of concentrical dots.

If they leave a wet red color stain, it's probably insect blood. Make sure they don't kill your fig tree, I'd scrape them off, and hose the branch off.

Actually insects usually have colorless, yellow, or green blood. They lack hemoglobin that mammals have giving our blood a red color. Red 'bleeding' is observed when killing mosquitoes and leeches because they are full of our blood.

It shouldn't be much of a prob scale is pretty easy to get rid of.
