Cacti & rain
    #5743929 - 06/12/06 09:51 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

so im in south florida and its been raining daily for the past week and my poor cacti havent had a chance to dry out. what should i do with them? bring them in? moving them out of the rain would deprive them of sunlight, be it bringing them in the house or putting them under the house. theyre all in pots so moving isnt an issue, i'd rather not have to do it though. most are in terra cotta so they do dry out after a day or two. so do you guys think they will be ok with the constant rain or must i rescue them.

I'd move them out of the rain if it's been a week straight.

It sucks to deprive them of light, but root rot is just shitty to not avoid.

What cacti?

I have Trichocereus that have been sitting in a month of rain and its winter. They're fine.

That's good to hear. I suppose just not using a plastic pot is key?

yeah some tolerate being wet, some will rot given the slightest chance.

If it rains a LOT. Make your mix the most porus non absorbent mix you can.

I use nothing but reef tank substrate. Its nothing but digested coral from parot fish munched up and popped out. Like a porus calcium sand. Drains well holds minimum water and deters rot.

i have room in the house by a large window where there is constant sun. this is where i keep my grafts and cuttings until they take. i may just move everyone in there.
or i could build some sort of clear roof for them outside but im sure the wind would have something to say about that.

A few years ago we had rain every single day for a month and my cacti loved it. Pedros and torches both like it. I would not take them in. Only a few dry desert cacti don't like it such as lophos or hoodia.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.” (attributed to Alexis de Tocqueville political philosopher Circa 1835)

Just make SURE you have well draining soil. Alot of store bought pedro's have a lot of peatmoss in the soil which'll hold water like a mofo.
