Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle accident this morning on Second Avenue near the 10th Street bridge, police said.

Damn. Could be bad news. If they closed the tunnel, that sounds pretty serious.

He got hit by a car. There was a pool of blood. Uh oh.

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was injured in a motorcycle crash and taken to a hospital Monday morning, and a pool of blood was found at the accident site.

"He was alert and conscious," said Ernie Roman, shift commander for the Allegheny County emergency service.

Steelers Dave Lockett, outside Mercy Hospital, confirmed the accident but did not provide additional details. There was no word on Roethlisberger's condition.

The crash happened at an intersection at the edge of downtown.

A silver Chrysler New Yorker with damage to the front passenger fender was removed and Roethlisberger's bike was loaded onto a flatbed truck. Police were detouring traffic around the crash scene as onlookers and media gathered.

In only his second year in the NFL, Roethlisberger helped guide the Steelers to the Super Bowl championship last season.

Calls to Roethlisberger's agent, Leigh Steinberg, were not immediately returned.

The 24-year-old Roethlisberger has said in the past that he prefers not to wear a helmet when riding his motorcycle. He has pointed out Pennsylvania's 35-year-old state law requiring helmets to be worn was amended to make helmets optional.

In May 2005, Steelers coach Bill Cowher lectured Roethlisberger on the dangers of riding without a helmet.

"He talked about being a risk-taker and I'm not really a risk-taker. I'm pretty conservative and laid back, but the big thing is to just be careful," Roethlisberger said at the time. "I'll just continue to be careful. I told him we don't ever ride alone, we always ride in a group of people, and I think it makes it even more safe."

In May 2005, Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. tore knee ligaments in a motorcycle accident and was lost for the season.

Roethlisberger continued to ride after Winslow's accident and that angered Terry Bradshaw, who quarterbacked the Steelers to four Super Bowl victories during the 1970s.

Visiting the Steelers' training camp last summer, Bradshaw remarked: "Ride it when you retire."

I just saw his bike on ESPNEWS.

It was pretty trashed, the wheel was bent all the way back.

I bet he's fucked.

Jon Clayton says the injuries arent life-threatening.

Thats helpful.

Roethlisberger lost most of his teeth, fractured his left sinus cavity bone, suffered a nine-inch laceration to the back of his head and a broken jaw, and severely injured both of his knees when he hit the ground, police said.

A plastic surgeon has been summoned.

"He is right now in the (operating room) undergoing some surgery from injuries he received in this accident today," said Dr. Larry Jones, chief of trauma and burns at Mercy Hospital, Uptown. ... He was talking to me before he left for the OR. He's coherent. He's making sense. He knows what happened."

Omar Jacobs isnt anything close to roethlisberger material, it would be a huge loss if he can never play again

i know you guys are all calling him a dumbass, and rightfully so for not wearing a helmet.. but its an acident, he might not have even been at fault.. i wonder what kind of damage was done

Looking at the car and the bike it looks like he hit her on the passenger side towards the front of the car, so either she ran through an intersection or he did I think.

nope, not yet at least

he's got a great frame, and he's quick
but he's not as bulky as mcnabb, nor does he have as strong an arm nor has the reads

he's a lot bigger than Randle El, but not near as fast/agile

he was a good pick up late
i think they got him fourth round, maybe fifth

big ben, Ward and Randal El were solid in my fantasy team last season. what a shithead to ride a sport bike, around the city, during morning traffic, without a helmet. Eating through a straw for 6 weeks is gonna be great for getting in shape for next season.

I hope Ben doesn't play again, there's plenty of guys out there that would do anything for the opportunity to play in the NFL, and he's willing to throw it away.

I know what you mean, but yes, I can...

I rider doesn't sustain a broken jaw, missing teeth, head lacerations when they are wearing a helmet.

MAJOR IDIOT... huge opportunity, and he smashes his head on the hood of a chrysler... I could do that, I can't throw a football. I can eat a fucking steak with a fork and knife too.

his ability to play football has nothing to do with being hit by a car

yeah, it was stupid not to wear a helmet

but it's not his fault he was injured

if he started snorting blow and shot himself, then i'd blame him

it is his fault he got injured as bad as he did. What kind of fucktard rides a sport bike without wearing a helmet. His own coach and Terry Bradshaw along with many sports writers called him a fool for riding without a helmet considering the amount of young athletes who careers have been set back or finished because of injures sustained from riding. At least the injuries were to his head, obviously not his best asset.

get your facts straight first, notice the impact on the side of the car and the front of the bike.

most people are working on monday morning at 10am. Not driving fancy motorcycles around the city.

He broadsided a car, he drove into the side, he slammed his face on the hood. I blame him, he drove into the side of some woman's car, to top it off, he's fucking stupid too for not wearing a helmet.

Maybe he needs training wheels or better, a police escort around the city so he doesn't crash into us normal folks.

I have been trying to get some clarification on to what exactly happened to his knees. All the news outlets that i have seen have made no mention about anything happening to his knees but the local Pittsburgh station reported that his knees were severly damaged.

I just heard on the radio that he'll make a full recovery and there was no brain, abdomen, neck or spine damage.

Nothing happened to his knees according to this show.

It's good to hear that he didn't suffer any head injuries. That is the first thing that came to my mind when I first heard about it. Wrecking a motorcycle without a helment=head injury.

He is a stupid fuck. He ignored warnings about riding without a helmet. He's paid millions of dollars to QB. He let his team down by being so irresponsible. He deserves to be fined. He is lucky as shit he is not dead. There should be a dumb fuck penalty assessed to him once the season starts. He needs to be bitch slapped upside his broken jaw for good measure. Don't blame the lady, and 62 is not geezerville. You have to drive defensively on a motorcycle in the city. He deserves to become a organ donor. I'll take his right arm.

I don't think wearing a helmet would have saved him from his FACIAL injuries.   And yes, 62 is old.  I actually get very nervous and defensive when I know that cars around me are driven by senior citizens.  I've have seen some fucked up shit from what old people do.  Younger people might drive crazy but at least they have the reflexes to do something about it.  Where as an old piece of shit will continue on doing whatever it is they were doing without any notice going on around them.  It's actually very freighting.

yeah, ben's stupid for not wearing a helmet, and im sure he'll be a lot uglier for it now. and monday morning traffic isn't the place to be ridin a hyabusa either.

she's a dumb cunt who has no business driving, he's a superstar QB who shouldn't be riding a bike without a helmet.

they're both fucktards.

He didn't have a motorcycle license.

Report: Roethlisberger didn't have motorcycle licenseESPN.com news services

Ben Roethlisberger might have been riding without a license to drive a motorcycle when he was involved in an accident Monday.

Pittsburgh television station KDKA reported Tuesday that police are checking whether the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback had a license.

AP Photo/Keith Srakocic
Roethlisberger was riding this motorcycle when he collided with an automobile in Pittsburgh on Monday morning.
Sources told the TV station that Roethlisberger had a license to operate a car but has never had a Pennsylvania motorcycle license.

Roethlisberger had a learner's permit to operate a motorcycle that expired March 29 but had never taken the written and driving tests for a motorcycle license, a source told KDKA.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Tammy Ewin told the station that police would "have no comment on licensing issues" until after the accident investigation.

Roethlisberger, the youngest quarterback to lead a team to the Super Bowl championship, had surgery Monday after breaking his jaw and nose in a motorcycle crash.

Roethlisberger remained in serious but stable condition after seven hours of surgery, according to Dr. Daniel Pituch, chief of oral and maxillofacial surgery at Mercy Hospital.

"He suffered multiple facial fractures," Pituch said. "All of the fractures were successfully repaired. His brain, spine, chest and abdomen appear to be without serious injury. And there are no other confirmed injuries at this time."

The doctors declined to release further information at the family's request.

ESPN.com's John Clayton confirmed that Roethlisberger also suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, has lost or chipped a number of teeth and has minor injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

Roethlisberger, 24, was not wearing a helmet, police said. He has said he likes to ride without one, a habit that once prompted a lecture from Pittsburgh coach Bill Cowher.

In May 2005, Cowher warned him about safe riding after Cleveland Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. was injured in a motorcycle accident. Winslow tore knee ligaments and was lost for the season.

Roethlisberger has pointed out a Pennsylvania state law requiring helmets was amended in September 2003 to make helmets optional.

ESPN.com football writers Len Pasquarelli and John Clayton and The Associated Press contributed to this report

According to hospital reports, motorcycle riders make the best organ donors, especialy the ones that do not were helmets. Reason being that they're usually, young healthy males, who have suffered head injuries. Who wants a mushed up brain for donating, but the rest of the organs are usually in good shape. He has let other people down with his lack of responsibility. It would be a different story if no one depended on him, who would care. But his team depends on him and he is paid millions to be QB, not even mentioning that he might have a family that needs him, he is lucky not to be dead. I don't care if cyclist don't want to wear helmets and I used to ride myself. Got tired of being cutoff by car drivers(yound and old!). Riding a fast bike in city traffic is NO fun. Just think of the people beside yourself who are affected by a bad accident. It is selfish not to care about who else gets hurt by your own stupidity.

Yeah, just look at the damage. No matter who's fault it was he had to have been going faster than the speed limit. And maybe it's just me, but if I'm on a bike with no helmet, I would slow WAY the fuck down at intersections.

Wearing a helmet can potentialy introduce risks of their own; while providing safety in an accident, they might be a major contributor to an accident. Some of these contributors might be lower visibility and/or increased wind resistance causing fatigue...

I'm not advocating that a person not wear a helmet, but I am making a case that I don't blame a person for deciding not to. Even though, there is evidence that deaths and serious head injuries increase and that treatment costs rise for the injured.

Also... I heard a report saying that on the police accident report it was a low speed accident. I'll try to find it.

why are you so surprised the only reason people give a fuck about him or any athlete in the first place is because he can do what he does. I'm sure hundreds of people were injured in accidents today alone but they won't get so much as a sentence in the newspaper. The only reason you even heard about the accident is because he can throw a football period.

You get your facts straight, Nashbar.  The dumb cunt driving the car made a left turn directly in front of him and failed to yield.
"Martha Fleishman, 62, of Squirrel Hill, was driving the car west on Second Avenue and turning left onto the 10th Street Bridge when Roethlisberger's Suzuki Hayabusa, which was heading east on Second Avenue, struck the car.

A witness said Roethlisberger didn't appear to be speeding in the 35 mph zone, and Fleishman had slowed to make the turn. Both drivers had a green light, the witness said. "
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/s_457685.html

He was an accident waiting to happen, as are all bikers.  To ride without a helmet is even dumber but he was not at fault in the accident.  And what's your problem with fancy bikes and having a non 9-5 job?

It should also be noted that 80% of auto fatalities are due to head injuries, but only 15% of motorcycle fatalities are due to head injuries, yet nobody calls car drivers stupid for not wearing helmets. That seems a bit odd. In a car accident, you're thrown forward into the windshield head first, seat belt or not. The major cause of motorcycle fatalities is internal injuries. The rider is thrown into the handlebars and his torso wraps around them, destroying internal organs.

If anything, helmet laws should apply to cars, not motorcycles. I fault big Ben more for riding a silly girly man jap bike than for not wearing a lid.

How fucked up is this...I met and talked to the guy who took that picture. He is a friend of a friend and he lives near where the bike and the car were taken. He ran down, took pictures, and sent them to the local news programs.

Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?
No, says the man in Washington; it belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican; it belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow; it belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose...
Rapture.

If you weren't attacking the whole lot of them and I didn't agree with your statement I'd have your ass on a plate right now.
