My mouse isn't working. Anyone have troubleshooting tips?

I was just given an HP Pavilion 8240, loaded with Windows 95. The mouse is not working at all. I have tried other mice, new software. I can't find any kind of system restore. I have to navigate with the keyboard and I don't have the patients or knowledge to keep trying ideas at random. If anyone has tips or suggestions I would really appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Is it a USB mouse? The original version of Windows 95 (and even second edition) had poor support for USB. Try a PS/2 mouse, or upgrading your OS. Boot with the PS/2 mouse plugged in to ensure it's recognized.

Tried USB and PS/2. No luck. By OS do you mean operating system? I have been tempted to try loading XP. I know many people don't care for it but I am familiar with it. It works well for me and what I use the computer for.

According to HP's site your computer has a 233 MHz Pentium MMX and anywhere from 32 to 384MB of RAM. I would definitely not recommend putting XP on that box, and since Windows 9x has a critical and "unpatchable" security flaw I'd actually go with Linux for that system. Try burning Gnoppix to CD and boot to that just to ensure it recognizes all your hardware. If it doesn't detect your mouse at that point, there's something wrong with your motherboard's USB controller. Assuming everything works okay you can go on to install the full-fledged operating system. Ubutntu is that flavor of the day and would probably work well on your system, although I might even go with Xfce instead of Gnome or KDE to ensure smooth performance. I know this advice doesn't help much if you have no experience with Linux, but it'll at least give you a place to start. Good luck!

I like the way you patch Microcrap's "unpatchable" design flaw. Out of curiosity, what does Microsoft recommend in these cases? Lemme guess, throw the machine away and buy something that can run XP?

No no that would just be ridiculous! They simply expect you to put all your 9x boxes behind a firewall blocking port 139 TCP.
NT has always treated me well but such isn't the case with that bloated monstrosity of DOS they tried to pass off as an OS for a while...

> NT has always treated me well
NT wasn't really a Microsoft design. Typical of Microsloth innovation, they hired developers away from Digital that had been working on the VAX/VMS to design and build WinNT. This is why NT has things like an honest protected memory model, working virtual memory, a real file system with premissions, etc. Windows NT was way ahead of its time for a Microsoft product. Too bad the Win98 team won out over the NT team within Microsoft... we would have a lot less malware problems today had MS stuck with NT/VMS rather than Win9x/DOS.
