Lowest fruiting temp.
    #5740845 - 06/12/06 06:54 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Just wondering what is the lowest temp you've ever seen/heard for a succsesful fruiting stage?

winter has just hit where i live and i'm worried i might need to heat my terranium as i'm deffinetly not maintaining a high 70's temp., its only 63F right now.

Below is an outdoor flush when the temperatures were in the low fifties during the day, and dropping to the low forties at night.

Never heat a terrarium. If you do, the warm air in the terrarium and the cool air outside will cause your substrate moisture to puke out in order to form condensation on the sides of your terrarium. If you DO need to heat, heat the room the project is in, not the terrarium.

yeh i had read a few posts and teks saying to never heat the terranium (and a few others that seem to swear by it) but i didnt consider heating the room, thanks RR.

Well since it summer now,

It has been a little slower, though I am in no hurry,

I've fruited at less than 60F. It just takes FOREVER. It was in the winter and our furnace was screwed up. The flushes were taking about 2-3 weeks each.

yeh that sounds like my situation john. the overnight temps get below 60 and i've had a cake in my terranium for 15 days without it showing any visible signs (that i can tell) of myc growth or pinning, except a small amount of very fine fuzzy myc showing up on the top and sides in the past couple of days.

i put a heater on in my room this morning but it isn't very strong so i have had to pretty much aim it at the terranium which has raised the temp to high 70's but is noticeably decreasing the humidity (i've sprayed 3 times already today, in addition to the perlite and large air-stone humidification).

any advice would be much appreciated.

Low 70's is perfect. Don't aim the heater at the terrarium. Perhaps your post will help to disprove the myth that you need to cold shock cubes, huh?

PINS!! On inspection tonight my cake has (what i think is) pins growing on the top and in different spots around the side.

this is after heating my room for the past 2 days trying to keep its temp to around 76F, in reality it probably avg'd bout 71F

Finally, after 17 days in my terranium!! if anyone can confirm the identity of the white spots on the top of this cake as pins...

They're primordia, the birth of pins. Don't mist them directly. Congratulations!

was hoping the primordia would grow quicker than this..

photos taken 5 days after previous ones.

the change in size of the primordai from the last pics is barely even visible.

i guess it's due to the low temp. in my FC??...

Pins grew to 2mm then stopped [Re: soma_seeker]
    #5774879 - 06/21/06 12:01 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

the pinheads on the top of my cake have grown to a size of only 2 or 3mm and turned completely grey in the week since i noticed them show up. plenty more tiny pure-white pinheads have shown up too but they also seem to turn grey and stop growing (after growing extremely slowly).

my humidity is high, i have a bubbler running in the bottom 24/7 for FAE as well as briefly hand fanning at least twice a day and the temp will rarely go below 68F

has anyone experienced this or know whats going on? should i just abandom hope for the cake or is there something i can tweak?

thanks people

Don't they have heat where you live?

Your pics are kinda fuzzy. Look closely at the grey and try to tell if it's a contam or not. Hard to say from the pics.

no, heating isn't very common where i live. it's winter now and wont get much colder than what it is. i was using a small heater to heat my room (still do at night), but it seemed to drain RH a fair bit.

sorry bout the pics i'm getting a lot of repflection off the top of the cake. here are a couple i took just now..

as for wether there's contam i'm not sure. one pin has a small bulbous head on it thats nothing like i've ever seen on a pin that size (not that i've seen many)

thanks for ur time

Have you been using peroxide on them?

No, I wouldn't use it. Peroxide will cause myc to grey and stunt it somewhat, so I thought you might have been using it.

I don't know what to tell you except wait and see what happens. If they've been in there 17+ days then they'll probably flush soon. It looks like it's starting to pin, the primordia is clearly visible. Just give it some more time.

dont mist them directly. i do not have any cake experience but 17 days would annoy me. what I do is set up a mini greenhouse around my setup and put a heater in there. that way its not heating the whole room but a mini room. works great for me after casing. Grey pins do not sound good. You may switch over to iodine. get some filtered or boiled water. Add 2-3 drops iodine and it should be good for a long time. I am not gonna use peroxide anymore since Iodine works for a much longer time span. hmmmm rh being affected that heavily by a heater is odd. you might try getting a bigger air pump or using a cool mist. you also may not have enough FAE to form pins. I had that problem on the last grow. Lots of mushies but they were twisting and splitting do to high co2 rates
