Trespassers With An Attitude
    #5739741 - 06/11/06 09:38 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

I'm sitting in my office and looking out the window and see three kids perhaps 12 years old one boy Mexican and two girls Caucasian slither down the line of trees along my neighbors fence which is odd because first of all there are zero kids living in my area and on a Sunday afternoon why are they here?  They proceed to jump my 3 ft chain link fence with I thought was odder still.  Then they ran the length of my yard to the back corner where it is hidden from my view.  I wait a minute thinking should I go out there and confront them or what when I hear them jump the 3 ft chain link fence and they leave.  While it is extremely odd behavior, I figure maybe they are playing hide and seek with the kid I see riding his bike up the hill shortly thereafter and that they will head him off at the pass.  Or who knows.  An hour later I am looking out of my kitchen window where I can see the chain link fence where the three kids first trespassed on my property.  I am in disbelief when now there are four kids, same three as before and an extra rather sleazier looking maybe 13 year old white boy with that black outfit troubled look.  The Mexican kid has his foot up on the top of my chain link fence as they are all apparently ready to jump it and go into my back yard.  I say "hey don't do that, what are you doing?"  Blank stares and the Mexican kid still has his leg up on the fence.  Sitting on the fence so to speak.  The blondie 12 year old gives me a nasty look and says "Excuse Me?"

Trespasser with an attitude.

I said "Private Property."

They turned on their heel and walked back the opposite direction from where they had first come.

Perhaps they come from a tribal culture with no concept of land ownership.

The American Indians tell me that. "This used to all be our land."

These kids were one Mexican and three Caucasians and below the age of land ownership, however...

Surely I do. But I'm reminded of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon's famous declaration: "Property is theft."

Of course, in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox finds an interesting correlary to that: "Property is theft, therefore theft is property, therefore this ship is mine."

So you are saying these kids wanted to thieve me? Perhaps that only makes sense. They were casing the joint the first time and the second brought the real thieve. He doesn't waste time for the initial casing and plus that way he wouldn't get busted if my place was like a fortress.

Or something like that.

I was actually trying to make this thread relevant to P&S by turning it into a discussion of private property and its implications.

I almost got robbed by my own cousin. Can you believe that?

Me and the guy haven't spoken in quite some time, and one day he came to "visit" me. I was suprised, so I took him in, gave him some dinner and we talked.

The next day my neighbours reported seeing him with some girl climbing on the backyard wall trying to get in, but they gave up when they were observed.
That was years ago, and right now he is a real criminal, he robbed some place with some friends and is on parole now (he is still a youngster, so he didn't go to jail).

He came to sort of scan the situation in the house and to see what he can steal

I've really got some great relatives.

Busted a dude stealing dvds at work today. :smirk:

I keep finding busted open dvd cases in my lamp aisle, and today, I walk in to do some price changes and find some dude standing there with a stack of dvds in hand. Hhhm... 4 o' clock in the afternoon, and some lone dude standing there looking at lamps with a handful of dvds....

I did the expected "How are you today, is there anything that I can help you with?" routine. He took off for my picture frame aisle, so I follow him and start scanning random things... he goes out into the action alley.. so I follow him... I find a salaried member of management standing there, so I let them know what is going on, as the dude is looking at the X-Box 360s that we just today set up for display out in the action alley. We just got that spider wire, the stuff that wraps around the box that will set off an alarm if you cut it or go out of the store with the entire thing...

I let her know, and she doesn't do much, but my assistant manager saw me talking to her, so I let him know. We go to find the guy, and there he is in Domestics, with the dvds sitting on top of a box of pillows. My guy is like "Got him!" and doubles around the next aisle.

He goes up to him and tells him to put his knife away (he was splitting them open), to give him his dvds back, and kicked him out of the store.

As it turns out, they have been planning on putting up a board where they will take pictures of everyone who deters a shoplifter in the act, so they snapped my picture, standing there, holding the assortment of dvds...

I'd suggest not making any accusations, and simply go out and start bugging them all the time, act as though you are a lonely old man (shouldn't be too hard to play that part, eh? :smirk: ), start talking about the weather... if they are teenagers, I doubt they are going to want to be bugged like that.

You've already made your worst mistake, telling them "Private property!". Now they are going to do shit just to piss you off. Haven't you seen that episode of the Simpsons, where Jimbo, Kearny, and etc. are standing in the Leftorium, and Flanders freaks out and goes up to ask them to leave? As he is walking up to them, they are about ready to leave anyways, but they ask if they would kindly leave, and the one drops his drink... next thing you know, they've chased him out of town with their motorbikes...

Peace. :mushroom2:

"seems like a perfectly normal occurance to me, passing through backyards is fun..."

Would it seem as normal for three kids to walk a mile out of their way and up a hill to your house, pass through your yard, walk another mile from your house to pick up their fourth friend, then walk another mile just to pass back through your backyard?

You just made your worst mistake because you will be seeing the shoplifter you let go again.  He is emboldened by getting caught splitting DVDs open and not busted.  He'll be back.

In my situation, telling the kids "Private Property" was the appropriate response.  Kids, like dogs, respond to proper boundaries and clear commands.  They will not be back because they slinked away with their tails between their legs.  Or something like that...

I have an environmentally friendly means of keeping trespassers away...I just shoot them on sight. It takes care of the problem pretty quickly, and you don't have to deal with people's nasty attitudes. The rotting corpses are wonderful organic food for the local wildlife. .30-06...Kills Trespassers Dead!!!

Just a thought but since you apparently couldn't bust this guy in spite of his obvious vandalism with intent to shoplift, wouldn't it have made more sense to wait until he left the store with the removed DVDs? That way you could have actually said he was shoplifting. Right Kojak?

I would have shot them but all I had on hand was a cell phone.

Do you think the sheriff would have understood me killing four kids for attempted trespassing?

Once again, I did everything that the company allows someone in my position to do. I'm an hourly supervisor, but only salaried members of management can confront and apprehend shoplifters. Like I said, it wasn't my choice.

And, actually, its difficult to apprehend them. The policy is that if you lose eye contact with them for even one second after they have taken the product, then you cannot stop them. Its a huge liability issue, basically.

Honestly, most of the time, there isn't anyone in front of the cameras. The attiude is that it is sitten written off as a percentage of shrink in inventory. If you can engage your associates to practice behavior that will deter shoplifting, as I did, then so much the better.

The dude, quite simply, was a fucking moron. You don't go into the store like that on a Monday afternoon, around 4 pm, to steal. The store isn't nearly as busy as it is in the evening, and most of the associates will be on the salesfloor. In the evening, most of the salesfloor associates will be running cash registers, since there isn't enough cashiers, and the store will be full.... A MUCH better time.

Do they provide you the kid gloves to treat all the shoplifters or do you have to buy those yourself? Thank God Wal-Mart gets all it's merchandise from China so they can afford to let some of it go out of the store for free and not worry about it.
