Two Questions; Spawn Colonization ETA and Peeking

First question: I spawned a few jars of WBS to hpoo+expanded clay at a 1:3 ratio. How long does it take for the broken up WBS to recover and start spreading through the hpoo?
Second question: I've been told not to peek. But the lid on the pan is aluminum foil with fork holes punched in (per Roadz' tek). Is the warning against peeking to prevent contams or to prevent me from waiting for the proverbial pot to boil?

both.
with no wrap under that foil, you really can't be looking. If you want to look, use plastic wrap with the holes, and crumpled foil over that. run some tape around the edges to hold the wrap on before you put the foil over.
just leave it be for a week to ten days before looking.
expanded clay, huh? hook me up with some info on it. just curious.

I have always peeked. Everyday. Curiosity may have killed the cat but it makes mycology a lot more fun to me.
It's true that light is a pinning trigger and pinning triggers should be introduced simultaneously when it's time to fruit. A minute of light while you check your progress doesn't seem to hurt pinsets or raise the risk of contamination. Low gas exchange, overheating, poor pasteurization and poorly prepared casing layers seem to cause the most problems IMO.

Schultz Multi-Purpose Soil Conditioner.
Basically crushed hydroton. Says right on the bag that it's designed to be a replacement for vermiculite.
