pH and stuff
    #5739031 - 06/11/06 06:28 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

So, I'm starting to understand the basics better and now wonder on things like pH. What is the ideal pH desired for substrates? And, where does lime come into play. I purchased lime thinking it keeps a buffer for pH around 7. Can anyone shed some light on the subject. Thankyou

I did my own research and found that hydrated lime is good for casings to keep a steady pH and to fend off contams. Gypsum does the same, but not as powerful. That is why gypsum would be better for substrates. So, can I find gypsum at homedepot or walmart?

I went looking for hydrated lime at 4 garden centers in my location, and every person in the garden centers had no idea what hydrated lime is and none of them carried hydrated lime in their stores

WTF?

Where can I find hydrated lime at? I need to start my casings right away!

I haven't seen hydrated lime in any stores around here, but you can definetly find gypsum or at least a gypsum mix in the garden supply center of places like Walmart or Menards.

Need to pick some up myself.

Gypsum is what sheet rock is made out of.  So if you can't find any just punch a hole in the wall and use some of that.

Correct. You can go to home depot or similar and just buy a sheet of drywall to use for the gypsum. Remember, gypsum contains both calcium, a sweetner, and sulphur, which is sour. Together, they work to hold a steady ph and avoid radical swings.

Gypsum is not a substitute for lime. You still need hydrated(water soluable) lime to get the ph right in the first place. I shoot for a ph of 8 to 8.5 to start, knowing that as the mycelium colonizes the substrate, the metabolytes which are acidic will lower the ph to around 7 at the time of fruiting, which is perfect.

In the US, Best Hardware stores carry hydrated garden lime. If your local store doesn't have it, you can order it online from www.doitbest.com Just go to that site and use the site search to type in hydrated lime. They also have gypsum.
