Everywhere i go it seems that companies are trying to reduce peat content in their products and have still not come across peat moss. I will continue searching but if i can find any at all, i was wondering if this would be as good or if not better :
http://www.gardenhealth.com/product_range/feed_all/waterretaininggel.php
Holds 400 times its own weight in water! I am guessing this will be the same as the pollymer casing layer thats included with myco farm kits.
what do yall reckon?

nah man, skip that and find some peat moss. If you can't find the peat coco coir is an ok substitute, you can pick up coir at any major pet store.

I don't like the idea of putting a gel on your substrate. If you can't find peat, Jiffy mix and sunshine mix #3 have both been used for casing layers. Otherwise, just fruit your substrate uncased. You can always dunk between flushes. RR

actually, i dont think it's a gel per se, the site says they're water absorbing crystals. Kind of like the aqua zorb stuff someone posted about a month or so ago. It might break down into a gel, but i dont see how it could recharge itself in that state like the site says.

no, coir is cocofiber. Otherwise known as bed-a-beast or forest floor in the petshops. You dont have a petco around? If you live in the UK your country should have a ton of hydro shops, find one and you've found all of your supplies.

haha, bed-a-beast. I have a pet shop near by, i'll have a look there. I also just bought a large bag of WBS. Looks different to the stuff i see in ppls grows. I guess it should still be ok. I do have a garden centre i wanna check out.

Lucky you. Our city won't let the bastards build one here. Walmart bites. If you use coir, use no more than 60/40 verm-peat. Be sure to lime it to a ph of near 8. RR

Boy i know whats it's like trying to get ur supplies in a country where its not as readily available as in the US. But like someone said before find a hydro store or just a growshop and they will deffinately have coir. Probably like bio bizz or b'cuzz stuff called coco-mix or smth like that. Then if you can at least find vermiculite in the UK (which, btw, I couldnt....not in Switzerland OR holland) you can make your casing mix.

I've used water crystals before.
this picture is 1/2 teaspoon before and after addition of water.
I wouldn't suggest any more than one crystal per 2" square of casing. Never use a water crystal in the substrate. These things are super absorbent and can be mis-handled very easily. I would just skip it for sure.
You can find peat or sphagnum peat. I know you can, it's everywhere. Go to your local tree nursery.
use the 50/50+ for casing, and if you want to experiment with water retention, read up on Diatomaceous Earth and use gypsum.
water crystals are far too absorbent in my experience. they seem to only work well for soils that would otherwise dry out completely for time periods.
we all know that our casings would never dry out totally, so I doubt water crystals will ever be used much in this field.

About the peat....you'd be surprised how you actually can't find it in certain places. I mainly have problem getting perlite/vermiculite around here, but even peat many of the garden centers near me stopped carrying that stuff and they opt for peat based soil mixes, to slow down the deterioration of the peat bogs...

Respect to that btw....peat bogs are home to pretty much all the carnivorous plants in north america. Of course sometimes I need it myself and it gets annoying not having it readily available, but we gotta conserve the bogs and the carnivorous plants. We have to make a compromise in this case, using less peat in return for having those beautiful carnivorous plants growing all over the place. Sorta like taking one for the team you know :P (except that in this case the cp's aren't really part of our team I suppose...)
