you can look at your jars all you want.
looking changes the temperature in your incubator though. The light won't hurt them.
So keep it closed and look once every week or so. If you are impatient and what not, buy more jars and do another batch to keep you occupied. spend some time researching.
wait, then wait some more.
If you don't want to wait so long, make a good Liquid Culture. It could easily cut your colonization time in half if done right.
You'll know a contam if you see one. mycelium is white. contams are everything but white. only hope for white.
If you did things correctly you should have no contams, so don't worry about them yet. Just worry about remaining sterile.

Keeping them in the dark is a good lesson in patience and proper technique. If all the newbies were to follow their own advice there yields would drop off considerably through pure ignorance. Of course light isn't going to stop myc growth but you do loose a VERY USEFUL TRIGGER. Peeking every few days is fine keep fanning durations short (15-20 seconds), invitro pinning usually occurs after full colonization anyway which (full colonization) is a survival trigger which can be used with great success when combined with your other pinning triggers at the exact same time. I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!"

In my very limited experience, I've sometimes seen germination in less than six days. Other times it's taken longer. Just sit tight =)
If you are really antsy waiting, why not mix up and inoculate another batch? Each batch takes such a god awful long time throughout its whole life cycle (incubation, waiting for pins, first flush, waiting again, etc.), it is nice to have several going at once to keep yourself amused. It won't be so painful to always be waiting.

I usually see some growth about day 4 or 5. Don't worry till about two weeks, then start over. Keep the jars at 80 degrees F.
