Coffee and agar?

I'm sure it will work, I mean why wouldn't it? Any one out there ever tried it? I'm thinking a 25% coffee to 75% water as not to lower the PH too much.

sure it will probably work, but what exactly are you hoping to accomplish? coffee as the only nutrient in addition to the agar rather than using malt or potato dextrose? i suppose if it works out it would be an interesting recipe for an easy alternative since its good to rotate media, but that's the only plus i can see through all of it. if you're planning on using it in addition to me/pd i don't see a point...
agar plates colonize pretty quick as is so if you're looking for a speed bump i don't think you're going to get the results you're might hope for in that respect.
you're obviously not fruiting off a plate either so cramming all the nutrition you can in there isn't really needed.
you already bring up the pH factor of the equation so it sounds like you know whats up there.
i'm all for experimenting, as i do myself with just about everything, i'm just not sure what you're hoping to find here...

Hey thanks for the input creamcorn I think im gonna skip it now. I was thinking along the same lines, that it might be excessive. I wasnt planing on using coffe as the only nute, I got dextrose, potato flour, and nutritional yeast. I was feeling experimental since this is my first try with agar and Im already using my own recipe for PDA, so ill keep the variables to a minimum.

why not try a couple with coffee only, and a few with coffee as an extra and some PDYA as well, make a real experiment out of it, you could be teaching us all something new.

I use coffee grinds in my compost and I hydrate grains with a weak coffee/water mix. However, a problem with coffee is that molds love it as much as mushroom mycelium. If you've ever gone away for a weekend and left coffee sitting in the pot I'm sure you've noticed mold on the surface when you returned.
Since we use agar to isolate away from contaminants, I wouldn't think coffee is the best choice. RR

Thanks for all the input every one! I think I'm just going to stick to my plan with the normal tried and true nutrients! BTW does any one have a good guide for mixing your own agar nutrient solution? Or is it basically, make it 4% sugar and the rest is up to you?
