I dont know about where you live, but you can buy them everywhere here.
http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html you need win2000 or xp. + usb2.0 or firewire
yes, they are expensive, but you usually get what you pay for - thats the general rule of thumb with electronics.

Dont get an Ipod. You can get a 20GB Creative Zen for around the same price as an 2GB Ipod. Unless you are in love with Apple, I would get something else. Fuck that pretty screen I was never impressed with it.

i got my ipod nano last december and have been nothing but pleased with it. i got mine at the virgin store on times square in new york. i got the nano because it fit perfectly in my coin pocket in my blue jeans. lot of people bash them... and there may be a better deal on some onther mp3 player, but it has always treated me right and taken some abuse in the process. i would purchase one again.

Avoid the older 40GB white non-photo iPod. (5th gen, I think) It is a lemon.

I just went through the process of choosing an mp3 player, and it's all documented in a thread in this forum, just scroll down to it.
Ipods are okay, but there are a lot of reasons to consider a different brand: -They're expensive. You can get waaay more storage for your money from other brands. -You can't replace the battery yourself, so if/when it fucks up, you have to pay a ton for replacement. -They're crippled with copy protection stuff, i.e., you can't copy your songs to a different computer with it, you can't upload anything other than music, pictures, etc. And you can only use certain programs to upload to them. You can, however, cure these problems by putting Linux on it (www.ipodlinux.net) if you're geek enough.
If you read my thread, you'll see I settled on an iriver H320. I haven't received it yet, but everything I've read makes it sound like a good decision.
Bio, to answer your question, no, Creative doesn't have standard USB mass.

one thing they dont tell you is that you can only have one ipod connected to one computer. i spent almost 6 months uploading music onto itunes then when i got a new computer i had to do it all over again. i had to rebuy some albums that i uploaded and then sold. oher than that its been ok. i would still go with another brand though.

that isnt accurate.
i have moved itunes from an old computer to a new computer. all you need is the exported list and to put your songs in the same relative directory.

I hate that shit.
You know another thing. I accidently erased some music files from my itunes and some of those erased from my ipod and some didn't. I'm unsure to what or why it did that.

You can drag/drop with special software, or with just your usual file manager? For linux, I've read that you need a program called gnomad to upload to a creative zen. If it used standard USB, that wouldn't be necessary.

i plug mine in through usb port and it installs like a jump drive in windows, then i put whatever files i want on there, i can put anything on it, not just music, the player itself just wont recognize them. I will try it in linux later to see if it works though

when I first got my zen micro, I just dragged music directly onto it. I had some problems though where occasionally it would freeze up and I'd have to pop the battery out. I updated the firmware and started using windows media to sync music and haven't had that problem anymore.
