LC jar woes
    #5736381 - 06/10/06 11:58 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

All the LC pics I find on here, the myc is very thick and full through the whole jar top to bottom.

With myne, its been in the incubator for nearly a week and 82F and still all I have gotten is this layer on the bottom.

Do people get their LCs with just a layer on the bottom or do they normally get the whole jar full?

I used 4% dextrose/malt extract.

have you used anything in the jar to help mix your solution? i.e. a Marble..just like shaking a paint can.

Yeah it will settle on the bottom,

Or float on top,

I have seen both,

I also think alot of the pics you might have seen were also using a magnetic stirrer. It helps with the LC producing wonderfully snowy white LC jars like in snaggletooths reply

i've just started making my own LC a week ago and was also suprised at how mine looked compared to some of the pics i've seen. not nearly as thick and only covering a small area of the bottom. i thought it might be because i didn't put that much honey in the 2 i prep'd. went ahead and inoculated with them anyway and it turned out 1 was contam'd :frown:

Currently I have three LC jars. I placed them on the mag stirrer for a few minutes each day until mycelium showed up. After a small cloud gathered they all shared a 24-hour cycle on the mag, 8 hours each.

The jars have now developed some nice myc. When they are on the mag the liquid behaves like a thin slurry. When the jars are taken off, the mycelium is evenly distributed throughout the LC for a while and those are probably the pics you see most often of LCs. The longer I let them sit off the stirrer, the more separated the mycelium becomes and the more distinct the honeywater becomes from the myc itself.

So yeah, don't worry. A magnetic strirrer is good for three things.

1) Helping the myc grow. The more surface area, the better the growth. Stirring increases exposed surface area.

2) Breaking up the mycelium so getting it into the syringe is easier.

3) Making pretty pics.

1-WRONG: stearing does not increases surface area. MATH!

Stear your shirt and it will get bigger?

come on how old are you?

Perhaps he was referring to the nutrients the myc will be growing on. If it is all globed together then the myc can only grow on the outside of the blob. If the blob is broken apart then the myc can hit each little blob on all sides. Which I'm pretty sure logically results in more surface area. And what is with you always saying "stearing" or "stear" instead of "stirring" or "stir". Is it some dialectic difference?

Yipes. Who pissed in your Cheerios, man? Settle down, pull up a chair. 'cuz you're about to get schooled.

Here's an experiment to try out.

Take some volume of ice. Say, 20 standard cubes. Set them aside.

Take another 20 ice cubes and put them in the blender for a few pulses. So it makes margarita-sized chunks.

Get two containers that hold the same volume and fill both 3/4rds full with water. Just don't fill so much that adding the ice will cause the container to overflow.

Now for the fun part. Find a watch.

Take the un-chopped ice cubes and put it in the first container of water. Immediately take the chopped ice cubes and put them in the second container. Begin timing. See which one dissolves first.

I could save you the time by telling you the chopped ice will melt faster and the reason it'll dissolve faster is because it has more surface area exposed. With more surface exposed, more (relatively) warmer water can make contact with the ice.

The same principle applies to the magnetic stirrer. The stir-bar will, over time, chop up the mycelium thus exposing more surface area to the honeywater nutrients.

Even if we assume that the stir bar provides no chopping action on the myc, it will still move the growth around and so it will not sit in one lump mass which will, again, provide more exposure of the surface area to nutrient.

Take a deep breath. Learn to disagree civily on Shroomery. Your experience here will be MUCH more pleasant if you do.
