Ignorant and possibly idiotic pet owners (are you one?)
    #5735200 - 06/10/06 06:58 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Pet parents seem purposely ignorant sometimes. For example, today someone brought in a golden mix that was matted to the point of being stiff like a brick. Except for its butt, underbelly and neck where there was no hair and the skin was scabbed over and red. The tail had no hair at all, it just had sores.

So I start shaving the dog. As the mats come off, I see that there are ticks and sores all beneath the dogs hair. I mean like serious sores, very red and oozing. There are yellow flakes of skin coating everything else...just touching the dog coats my hand with dried yellow skin.

So I call the pet parent, because obviously I am freaked out. I tell them about the skin condition I have revealed, and they say, "REALLY?!! We had NO idea!"

No idea...okay, half your dogs body was red and hairless when you brought the thing in. It was covered in ticks, when you told me you were giving it flea and tick prevention. Of course the medicine probably couldn't reach the skin through the impenetrable mats on the other half, but still.

As soon as I shaved everything off, the dog started tearing into its own sores with its nails, clawing at some horrific itch. You couldn't stop the dog because it would tear up your skin too. We kept trying to stop him, but soon he was bleeding in numerous areas from tearing up his own oozing skin from being so itchy. Eventually I wrapped all the dogs feet with cotton just so he couldn't injure myself when I wasn't able to watch him. We sprayed all his itchy sores with a cortizone spray, and waited for the owner to come.

What killed me...was how SWEET this dog was. Didn't complain at all, constantly wagging me in the face with his mangy, oozing tail. Looked like he appreciated the attention, actually. The dog was just so sweet...and yet his body was a total mess. And the owner had no idea. Probably because he comes in actual contact with the dog once a year whenever he unchains the animal from the backyard and takes it in for a summer shave.

Ridiculous.

That's only the tip of the iceburg, people. Believe it or not, I've seen much, much worse.

Wouldn't the right thing be to do the exact same thing to them? Having a pet is a responsibility you cannot pull some bullshit like 'oh we did not know'. Idiots.

I would report it.Why do it anonymously?

Something should be done.It wouldn't cost you your job would it?I would hope not.

That sucks you have to deal with that kinda stuff, abuse and whatnot, and not really be able to do anything about it.

2 ferrets. You have to have 2 or more. 1 is a bad idea. The are social and if you just have 1 that ferret will get pissy.

That's very fucking sad. I don't understand how people can treat an animal so badly. This may sound fucked up but I'm more compassionate towards animals than I am to some humans. (other than my family and friends of course.)

That doesn't sound fucked up to me. Animals are sweet and innocent and deserve compassion. People are stupid and evil and 9 times out of 10 they should really just be put out of their misery.

As humans we are also animals. Got Compassion, well save it for your fellow person. Some things I never understood.. Like the point at which as an acting organism it is justified to put another organism out of it's misery.
