Newb Question on Perlite

I have about a large shoe-box size container in which I have 2 inches of perlite and about almost 2 inches of water (overkill). There is one BRF cake put into this container after being dunked. I do not have a humidity gauge and the humidity would not cause condensation until I put about almost as much water as perlite. Now, my question is I was wondering if condensation is good and if there is a rule of thumb to get a good hold on what substantial humidity would be for the cake. Also, too much water? I am pretty sure i do have too much and I hope not to drown the cake. Please need help! thnx.

First of all make you do not plce the cake directly on the perlite, it is a better idea to have a can lid or tinfoil under it. Second of all, drain out the standing water. It is a breeding ground for contams. Moist perlite will do. You can get a humidity gage from wal-mart for six dollars and some change. It tells the temp and percent humidity. I got one and it works just fine. I have had droplets on the side and I have not had droplets on the side and the humidity has been fine. i think that condensation on the walls has something to do with the heat of your room. Good luck with the grow. Also try more than one cake, chances are it won't yeild terribly much and it is just as easy to do a few as it is to do one.

the height of the water is not suppose to equal or exceed the perlite level. you have equalled it. use half the height which would be 1 inch of water. the way this works is it creates humidity by evaporating and wicking the water up therw the perlite. when you have the perlite level and the water level equal there is no room for evaporation. with that amount of water you will definatly have enough humidity to fruit a cake. i have noticed that only on hot days does the container really condesate heavily.

Alright, this makes a lot of sence. There does not seem as much moisture now or does it just take a few moments for it to get humid in there? I am worried there is not enough humidity or the ceran wrap is not completely air proof.

as long as you have a rubbermaid/sterlite container or something with a lid you should be ok.
as for syran wrap...well that tends to bring more problems then solutions.
usually it takes an hour or so for the humidity but it can only truley be told by a hygrometer.
like i said before the humidity doesn't really show how saturating it can be until it gets pretty warm (84-86F). thwen the walls will be coted in water droppletts.
what exactly are you using for a cropping container???

It is a plastic see through container like a tupperware but without an airtight lid, so used seran wrap. Why is seran wrap more problems then solutions?

would investing in a cheap hydrometer be worth it and do I just leave it in the fruiting chamber?

cheap hygrometers are not worth the money.
that's something you want to spend on.

i bought a cheap one from petco, it only goes up to 95% but it agrees with my cigar humidor hygrometer. it would be best to just get a new container then a cheap hygrometer. would be about the same price. $7-$8.

my $7 Springfield Precise temp hygrometer from wal mart was reading +15% using the salt test. I ordered a more expensive one online.

Dump out ALL of the standing water and your humidity will soar to near 100%. The perlite can't do its job if it's sitting in water. Think about it.
You also don't want a tight seal. If you don't have air exchange, you'll get contaminants without a doubt.
Condensation is not an indicator of humidity in any way. Condensation is only an indicator of a temperature difference between inside and outside the tub. RR
