howdy ... its been a while since touring the MC. Since my return i see talk of corn as substrate. Let me first say i have never used corn, but i have used plenty of grains. most talk i hear or see is cracked corn or popcorn. I know corn is corn. In fact i have a degree in crop production, and have studied cereal grains , ect... Popcorn is just corn but is pulled inmature and dried. While feed corn,(deer corn) is reached a maturity. So i am sure there is some differences between the two like mainly starch levels ect. So if someone has a 50 pound bag of feed corn should he just crack it himself ?, leave it whole ? or just get popcorn ?

Neither. Corn is terrible about harboring bacterial endospores. It also has a large surface area which means you have only a fraction of the mycelium per jar that you would have with other grains. Remember, the mycelium colonizes the surface of the grains, so larger grains means less total grains in a jar, thus less surface area to colonize. In short, I used popcorn for well over a year before swearing it off forever. If you can't get anything else, it will work, but consider it a spawn of last resort.

I like using cracked corn. The stuff I get the pieces are barely larger than a birdseed. I havnt had any problem with cracked corn at all. I think it all has to do with how you prepare it.
