A painful Codeine OD
    #5733233 - 06/10/06 04:14 AM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Alright so Tonight I got ahold of a bottle of Mytussin/Codeine cough syrup. Two teaspoons was the recommended dose. When I had a cough and was sick I went up to one and a half tablespoons without affect. Tonight I gave 4 tablespoons a try. After that and a smirnoff twist, I still didn't feel much, a slight buzz.
I waited longer, and persuasion from the chatroom got me to take another tablespoon.
Well I didn't get a euphoric feeling after about another 15 minutes. Instead, my breathing became a little slower, and all of a sudden slight pains came to my chest cavity. I complained a little about it to the group and waited for it to pass, unfortunately, it only got worse. Finally I decided to call poison control, who sent out the paramedics. The pain was coming fast and hard, it felt like my interns were twisting and cramping and tearing apart. The ambulance and firetruck arrived at a time that I had nearly had a respitory arrest, and they gave me a shot of something, later finding out it was something, Naltrexin I think it was called?

Anyway, I learned a lesson, and that is, I'm a moron, and don't play with cough syrup. It may not be what most would consider a strong opiate, but do to the fact that they never really label exact dosage amounts per unit, as well as it has other chemicals in it including another opiate (not just codeine), it can be dangerous.

Holy shit, that must have sucked.

Maybe you should have researched more about it and taken it more carefully? Jesus, you took more just because someone in a chatroom told you so

BTW even if the dose is determined you should start with LESS the first times, you might be allergic (like myself) or it may contain another substances which may be dangerous.

You know what, before you judge that, think about the fact that I was already under the influence of opiates and alcohol, and making decisions isn't exactly the easiest thing to do in that situation.  (and that chatroom was also #shroomery).

I dont think he was judging you.Opiates and alcohol are not an excuse for making stupid decisions.

(and that chatroom was also #shroomery).

Yes and #shroomery has steered people in a perfectly good direction in the past havnt they?

I am sorry you had an unpleasant time.Do you know what else is in the cough medicine that may have caused these reactions?Live and learn right?

I hope you feel better.

So here you say you didn't feel much, and later you backtrack say your judgement was impaired...kinda sounds like you just want to blame this on the people in chat....

I agree. It also sounds like you just took to much codeine,I doubt it was anyother active ingredients in the cough syrup.I dislike codeine compared to other opiates.

I did 6x60mg codeine pills last night. I must say I did enjoy the mellow buzz.

No the alcohol had an affect, but I wasn't feeling a huge effect from the codeine.

And the part about it being #shroomery - I discussed it and came to the conclusion with multiple people after we tried to read more up on it. It wasn't like I was dared, so it was all on hopeful knowledge, that everyone was a little wrong on.

Naltrexone is a medication that blocks the effects of drugs known as opioids (a class that includes morphine, heroin or codeine). It competes with these drugs for opioid receptors in the brain. It was originally used to treat dependence on opioid drugs but has recently been approved by the FDA as treatment for alcoholism. In clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of naltrexone, patients who received naltrexone were twice as successful in remaining abstinent and in avoiding relapse as patients who received placebo-an inactive pill.

Just in case, you should probably live thru whatever they put into you and not try to force yourself to sleep. They gave it to contrarest what codeine did to you, who knows what could happen if you tried to change its effect

i had a bad time once, literally did just about the same as you. cousin gave me some, said she didnt even think it would do anything, despite it saying codeine on the label. told me she had taken two spoonfuls, nothing.. i took about five, got pretty sick. learned my lesson!

I don't think the OP was that stupid. Five tablespoons isn't that much, it just didn't sit that well with him. It could happen to anyone who's willing to sip syrup, which includes me.

overdosed? i said i got "pretty sick". i think i might have puked.. i sure as hell wasnt calling up poison control, though.

no, the point was.. learn your tolerance, dont listen to what someone else tells you, because everyone is different. seems like something youd have learned around here? :P

i happen to have a low tolerance to opiates.. but it works out great for me, as 10mg of hydrocodone is a good buzz.

I've also OD'd on Codeine. Nothing like puking up dinner in the middle of town, then blacking out and waking up and puking all night at home, watching my pupils, hoping they would shrink back. It was painful and scary. I haven't touched pharmaceuticals recreationaly since.

I have always been a big fan of cough syrups, but I get the Hydrocodone versions.
Tussonex suspension (orange-yellowish, thick, very sweet tasting, potent)
Prolex DH (green, normal consistency, sweet, mild)
prolex is sometimes substituted for the purple syrup if the have none.  It is about the same but a little milder.
These two are my favorites, and are good to mix with Sprite.  Start with a low dose, and do not re-dose for 2 hours, this will give you enough time for you to see what and how strong the buzz is.  Also, your first dose, shouldn't be more than the recommended dose, for safety of course.  Anyways, after you finish your first dose, drink a glass of water, and a glass of water before wouldn't hurt.
I have also tried VicoTuss, its a clear normal consistency syrup, not to good tasting syrup, (I believe the ones about have a sugar substitute added, because Prolex is given to people with diabetes.)  Vico Tuss is very potent, and shouldn't be taken lightly.  You should definitely drink a couple glasses of water before your first dose.  If you choose to mix with Sprite (this will help mask the taste) After each drink of VicoSprite (copyrighted, me) take a drink of h2o, this will help nausea and flushing.
Most importantly, be careful pace your self and have fun.  Also, I am an avid alcoholic, but I don't mix Alcohol with VicoSprite, its just not smart, and will make you feel bad.

Hey. that's mean :frown:

I'm also a small person btw... *grumblecakes*  If you'd had the pain I experienced last night, you wouldn't be poking fun.  It wasn't funny in any manner whatsoever.

And yeah you're right I made a mistake and I've admitted.  But at least I made it through.  I'll never touch a pharm. again.

And yeah I'm glad it happened to me, because I know a lot of people who wouldn't have called poison control... So I guess it's better to have happened to me and had me in an ER than happen to one of the other shroomerites and have them lying dead on a floor.

Wow, you overdosed from 5 tablespoons of Codeine cough syrup, you should have let natural selection happen instead of fighting it.

That's pretty fucked up of you to say. Wow you're not a nice person, perhaps you should walk in front of a bus. That's pretty much the equivalent of what you said to me. Just because I don't have a tolerance and perhaps maybe I'm allergic to it, doesn't mean I deserve to die.

Fuck man, I'd hate it if another 'ripper' incident happened. That's fuck the shroomery right over. weak sauce, dude

Syrup and alcohol surely don't mix. It's like giving your liver a straight kick. For me it's one or the other, and seeing as how I don't drink it just ends up being opiates alone.

Hope you're feeling better

Well I wasn't well educated about opiates and alcohol, though I was educated about benzos and alcohol.
