First Grow - Where to start?

I have ordered some Pleurotus ostreatus 'Grey Oyster Mushroom' mycelium dowels off ebay. This is my first ever grow with gourmet mushrooms and am just wondering how much difference there is between growing psilocybin mushrooms and gourmets. A few questions i have are: How do i make spawn, starting with these dowels? Whats the best substrate for oysters? I can get straw Would this be pasturized in the same way as hpoo? Is the spawn/substrate incubated and fruited at the same temps as Cubies?
Advice is highly appreciated.

Hey zeegos,
You can add one of the dowels to sterilized grain or sterilized sawdust to make spawn.
It would be hard to say what is the best substrate for oysters, they will grow on and fruit on anything with cellulose, they seem though to be really fond of straw, coffee grounds and cottonseed hulls. I think for a small grow cottonseed hulls are the easiest to use as you can pasteurize them in pot by boilingeditbring to a boil and in a covered pot simmer for 20 minutes and then drain and cool. The will grow on any hardwood, though in the wild I think you are more likely to find them on the softer hardwoods like willow.
For oysters, straw can be pasteurized by heating to 160 to 170 for a and hour in hot water and then draining, if you have a way to steam it at these tempatures that will work also.
Oysters for the most part like tempatures about 10 degrees cooler than Cubies for all stages of growth.
Hope this helps,
falcon

Thanks falcon I'll be getting my PC soon (7 litre beauty) and i'll get myself some nice jars for the spawn. I cant find any WBS at the mo. Maybe other bird seeds will work? Or i can get maze. I saw an interesing grow with the use of a paper roll i might give it a try. But since i live near farms, i think i'll just get myself a nice bale of straw.

7 liters sounds good,
other kinds of bird seed work, sorghum, millet, sunflower seeds, also rye grain, WBS is usually the least expensive, maize should work.
Have fun

It's better to use tyvek or polyester non woven interfacing than coffee filters. Coffee filters could be a place where mold could get started.

hmm, tyvek may be an American brand name. I believe its a type of breatable envelope? I will also look out for breathable tape. Also, is polyfill just cotton wool?

Yep, tyvek is a brandname and is sold as breathable envelopes, it is also used as house wrap in new home construction.
Polyfill is very similar to cotton wool, it is made from polyester fiber though, instead of cotton.
The polyfill they sell for fish aquarium filters is a lot finer and easier to work with than the one that is sold as pillow filling. The only drawback to the finer stuff is that is not as easy to push a needle through if you are working with liquid cultures.
I haven't tried breathable tape, thanks, will check that out.

I got these mushroom dowels today. I went out into a random field and hacked at a huge branch of a dead looking oak tree with my trusty axe. Rater tireing getting it home It was about 25cm thick and approx 80cm long. I drilled and plugged 8 holes in total. Im gonna keep the other 8 i have for some straw bags and maybe some LC, if its feasable?? I'll try pinch some straw from a nearby farm tonight

since the bag has been opened, go to agar this is what I do with dowels works like a charm just scape a bit of mycellium onto the agar with a scalpel IMHO do a couple plates with gentemycin (a antibiotic that survives pressure cooking) and some plates with hydrogen peroxide that culture probably needs to be cleaned up if it's open the peroxide helps to keep contam spore from germinating and the gentamycin is good to keep down bacteria never tried both in the same plate but that would probably work too
