Like fungus? It grows on you
Mushrooms add a delicious level of complexity to any meal. They have also been used medicinally for many years. Some are poisonous, some boost the immune system and others are just harmless. A unique food, neither vegetable nor animal- they are a fascinating, unique food.
Like chocolate, mushrooms have been saved as the 'food of the gods' and Egyptian Pharaohs believed they had magical powers.
Of the 70,000 species of the mushrooms in the world, only about 25 are actually edible.
Mushrooms will double in size every 24 hours.
There are 2000 different species of mushrooms eaten throughout the world, but the most common variety cultivated is the white button.
Since the beginning of recorded history, over 4500 years ago, mushrooms were an important staple in the diets of aborigines.
Mushrooms were also very popular in the civilizations of China, Egypt and Greece. Egyptian pharaohs and Roman emperors actually went so far as to forbid commoners from eating mushrooms; strictly reserving them for nobility only!
The fungus called truffles can cost $800 to $1,500 per pound. They are sniffed out by female pigs, which detect a compound that is in the saliva of male pigs as well. The same chemical is found in the sweat of human males.
The world's deadliest mushroom is the Amanita phalloides, the death cap. The poisons contained by the mushroom cause diarrhea, vomiting liver, kidneys, and CNS damage then coma and death.

Didn't the first line just say there were only about 25 edible species? The second line states there are 2000. Am I missing something or is that just a simple typo?

Horrible article (factually) but I'm happy if it gets somebody interested in mushrooms. Those were some of the coolest "facts" about mushrooms though. I can't not like it .
