Vacuum in LC Jar
#5728550 - 06/08/06 09:29 PM (17 years, 7 months ago) |

Today I was injecting spores into some LC jars that had been PC'd.
When I opened the PC, I tightened the lids on all the jars. One apparently was already too tight.
There was a vacuum in the jar, and I accidentally allowed it to suck 3cc's of spores before jerking it out.
Will mycelium still grow in there if there is a vacuum, or is my LC screwed?

you need an ae vent for LC I beleive, thats why alot of them say use tyvek or polyfil filters. I just put spore tape over my holes after I innoc. I can not say for sure if it screwed but I do not think vacuum in and lc is good but I really do not know

I just held the jar down and popped the lid with a knife to let some air in. When I popped the lid I had the unfortunate mishap of dropping it. I immediately sterilized it with rubbing alcohol, let it dry, and put it back on the jar.
I'm guessing its probably screwed but I suppose I'll just have to wait and see.

The vaccuum was fine but that air you let it probably had contams in it.
My LC jars have two holes, one large and one small.
The larger of the two is just big enough to accomodate automotive windshield wiper fluid tubing. I use RTV to seal the tubing to the lid and I fill the tube itself with polyfill. The smaller hole is simply RTV'd.
The small hole is to aspirate (remove) LC from the jar and is self-healing. The larger hole allows filtered air to enter the jar when I suck the LC out, thus preventing a vaccuum.
Here's a pic.

Trust me. It's more work to make them but my god they're worth it. No wet tyvek wicking contaminants. No using Goo Gone on micropore taped lids. Once they're made they're pretty much good until they literally wear out. And when I say "more work" I mean perhaps 5 minutes per lid.

Alright, thanks a lot.
One question though. How do you prevent the poly-fil from getting wet when you PC the thing?

First, apparently wicking in these setups isn't a big deal.
Second, you only fill the jar about 2/3rds full with the honeywater solution.
Third, put the jars into the PC upright.

FYI, If you run across a vaccumn it's pretty easy to get rid of if you have an empty syringe and some polyfill.
1.) pull plunger out of syringe and stuff it with polyfill 2.) Break the seal on your jar with the syringe
the polyfil will help filter any contams and allow the vaccumn to dissapate.

I will definitely do that the next time I run into this problem. Thanks so much.

Do you have the jars screwed tight when entering the PC? Or do you PC them loose and then tighten them? Also, how long are you PCing them? Thanks!
