Sask. Marijuana Party could be on ballots in next election

Voters could have another party to choose from in the next general provincial election now that the Saskatchewan Marijuana Party has become a registered provincial party. On Wednesday, it joined six other registered provincial parties in receiving the designation.

To get the designation, the party needed 2,500 signatures from 10 different ridings.

Federal Marijuana Party leader Blair Longley said the federal and provincial wings of the party agree that marijuana, also known as cannabis, should be decriminalized.

"If cannabis was not criminal, then it would no longer be under federal jurisdiction. It would be under provincial jurisdiction," he said.

"The Saskatchewan Marijuana Party would want the Saskatchewan government to legalize the cultivation and possession of cannabis for all of its possible uses ... food, fuel, fibre, medicine, recreation," he said.

Saskatchewan chief electoral officer Jean Ouellet said being registered means the party is allowed to raise money and spend money in the province. It's also eligible for government subsidies, including partial reimbursement of election expenses.

It can also run candidates on ballots under the party name. Until now, party candidates would be required to run as independents or as "no affiliation" candidates. The next general provincial election isn't expected to be called until next year.

The party leader is Nathan Holowaty and the president is Ethan Erkiletian.

No one from the Saskatchewan Marijuana Party was immediately available for comment.
