the mycelliem would not take up the nutrient slurry fast enough, and you would probably get a bacterial infection. Sponges are nasty things.

Hey Moe, you crazy fucker. Good to see you still around. Surprised to see you still playing with cakes, though. How are the hos in Atlanta this time of the year? Probably not ripe yet...

what whAT WHAT!?! I am gonna have to try that. I guess I did not follow completely the first time i read the post. I did not realize the mycellium completely enclosed the sponge. (note to self, lay of the ganj) And from this day forward I will never underestimate the power of fungus again. Hell the largest organism ever recorded was a fungus. I like trivia.

Good idea, Moe!  It's better than sealing the hole in your pressure cooker   But that was back in the day...
Anyways, the only problem I see is that the outside of the cake would be covered with spores and bacteria that are being inhibited by the mycelium but just waiting to germinate.  The moment your needle touches the outside of the cake, it's contaminated, and this contaminant will go into the sterilzed sponge with a bunch of nutrients to contaminate.
I was thinking about using H2O2 to sterilize the surface of the mycelium without damaging the fungus, but mycelium once fully colonized is impervious to the liquid.  This could also damage the mycelium and cause overlay.  You would need a surfactant, perhaps, to get the water to penetrate, but this could have adverse affects on the mycelium...

Are you referring to Moe's pressure cooker sized cake, or one of his other crazy acts? A pressure cooker sized cake, newbies who don't know, keep your eyes on moe. He's crazy!

damn moe sounds liek my kinda guy! mbe i should do some searches..... havent been her ethat long
edit
about the sponge; i like the idea a lot! but i think it might be very efficient to use a pint jar and have the sponge run more than halfway down it; maybe all the way to about 1/2 inch or an inch to the bottom. i mean i know that more substrate =more surface area for shrooms but also the larger sponge reservoir running the whole length of the cake would work extremely well; it would run down the entire sponge quicker than it could travel thru the mycellium network. maybe?!?

Holy shit people; COMMON SENSE! we were all born with it where did it go?
maybe theres a tek out there to explain how to use it!

have you ever tried using a sponge soaked in nutrient solution as a substitute for verm? pretty much knock up the sponge itself.

MOE!!!!!!!!!
your back! what a wonderful surprise!

Staments discusses longevity in depth.. parafin over agar in slants or dishes and immersion in HE3 or N2, I don't remember which cryogenic he mentioned..
anyway very happy to see you still alive and kicking!
