    #5728162 - 06/08/06 08:00 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

ok, I went back out to go find the cap I lost for a spore. plus I found some extras.

Habitat: Northeast Oregon, Found growing on or around wood.

Cap: about the size of a 50 cent piece. golden nipple on top fading to a cream color with a darker brown ring on the bottom.

Gills: Cinnamon color.

Stem: cream to light brown.

Spore: a light chocolate.

there was no apparent bruising on stem.

Habitat: in dirt along nature path.

Cap: Darker Brown nipple fading to a cream/orange. very upturned.

Stem: light brown, thick. Semi twisted. no bruising.

Spore Print: very dark brown.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Looking through the threads and other pics, I wonder if the first one is a Panaeolina foenisecii

the first one looks like your garden variety Psathyrella to me. Highly decomposed wood near soil level? did the stems break easily?
and yeah they make me hungry too... in a frustrated sense

Yes, highly composed wood near soil level. in shaded areas. I didn't try breaking any of the stems, I cut them all with scissors.

GeorgeM, were you thinking Psathyrella longipes??  I see the similarities, but I do not think this is it, notice the white stem of the psath in comparison to the brownish stem of this 'mystery mushroom'.

The mushroom shares characteristics of Psilocybe subviscida, but I think the best fit is Tubaria furfuracea, as you can see from the link below- the habitat matches perfect, the only thing inconsistent is the tiem they usually show- from early fall to late winter.... But if you indeed have a match with T. furfuracea, it would not be the first nor last time I see a mushroom fruiting out of season
Unfortunately, they aren't actives  :undecided:  But hey, they are very cool!!!  Give it time, you'll find the actives eventually!

I will post more later, gotta go for now!

The dark ring on the edge of the cap can occur on Galerina specimens- don't be too quick to judge all finds by the provided photography. If you do you will get into a lot of trouble mushroom hunting. Psathyrellas, as previously suggested by another member, are larger and do not bear brown spre prints. Again- this is just a page of info for cautionary purposes.
Cinnamon gills are a dead give-away, as is size. Spore print and habitat matches as well. Be careful...

I belive it to be Psilocybe subviscida. That is my best guess. Right spore print/cap colors. The stems look the same. The growing enviroment it a little off. but the Tubaria furfuracea does not have the distinctive dark brown ring.

"Habitat
Scattered, gregarious, or in rings in grassy areas, occasionally on dung and in other habitats ; fruiting from early to mid-winter."
(from p. subviscida page) - yours are growing obn wood in near summer.
Also from p. subviscida page:
"Spores
Spores 6.5-7.5 x 4.0-4.5 µm, lens-shaped, thick-walled, truncate with a germ pore at one end; spore print deep mahogany-brown."
Yours were described as "light chocolate"- not deep amhogany brown (purpley as most psilocybe prints are- VERY DARK)
Sorry brother. Happy hunting though.

You're reasonably out of season for both. Cool area though. Wait till the fall and you will have a blast.

I mean, Panaeolus often have ringed caps, but not always!  I still think Tubaria furfuracea.

Superblingtheory "don't be too quick to judge all finds by the provided photography"... point well taken. I didn't even realize the first and second photo were one in the same. Light chocolate spores would rule out Psathyrella anyway. When trying to identify LBMs soooo many subtle factors need to be taken into consideration... until you develop the force anyway... and I'm unwilling to even touch a key unless there is a mushroom in hand.
I think CureCat is on top of this one… it doesn‘t look like any Galerina I have come across though it does resemble the Tubaria I find growing in my poison ivy patch. I’m sure someone will know.

wow, you are right about the ring being there. And those look pretty much exact to what I found. Even the younger ones looked like the ones in your 3rd pic. The surrounding enviroment in your pictures is also very exact. just too bad it has to be poisenous.
