Aquarium Growing and its Possibilities
    #5727961 - 06/08/06 07:02 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Salutations community...
A few question for any welcome opinions or experts out there. Using a 20 gallon aquarium as a fruiting chamber with a humidifier and air exchange pump and a baking tray in which to mix the crushed substrate and casing together when the time is right. Other than opening the tank to mist the casing and such here is the quandary(s) I pose...

1.) Do you think one would need to do any additional fanning or air exchange?
2.) Should the baking tray just sit in the bottom, or should it be raised off the surface of the tank? (Or does it even matter?)
3.) Using a heating pad (under the tank), perelite, and the humidifier to play with getting the temp right, is this a little excessive or merely an attempt at being inventive? Thoughts?
4.) Any thoughts on yield potential using this method as opposed to cakes?
5.) Any other thoughts in general?

Any thoughts and advise out there in mushroom land? Thanks!

I used a 40 gallon tank for an FC. I think setting up a Cool Mist and FAE is going to be more work than needed for your tank. My current setup has worked like a charm.
Put two bubbler wands in the bottom and run two airlines from a 60gallon air pump to them. Poor in 2 1/2 - 3 inches of perlite. Soak the perlite in 1-2 inches of water. I had an extra heating pad and put that on the bottom of the tank. Along with that, I used a fish tank filter grate for my stand-off from the perlite and its worked like a charm. During the day, I use the florescent light on the top (a good one with a lot of blue) and the tank will stay at 83degrees and 90-100% humidity. Three times a day, I opened the lid and fanned out the air. Shut the lid and spray in a water and h202 mix to bring the humidity right back up.

If you want to use your method, I would recommend a full/open FAE at least once a day.
If your not placing any material at the bottom, the tray should be ok on the bottom of the tank as long as it doesn't get to cold or dry.
I like using a heating pad...just helped stabilize the temp a bit.
4)..not sure what your asking..An aquarium method as opposed to cakes?
5) Nope.

Thanks for the tip Kryptik, that sounds like a sweet setup. At this point I am simply tinkering with what ideas I am going to incorporate into my FC. I think I may lose the pad though, it seems like it may be a temporary solution, as well as a fire hazard. But, I guess use in moderation is the key. Thanks!
