My first find, strange looking.
    #5727916 - 06/08/06 06:46 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Texas:
I was walking my dog, and I found about 10 mushrooms around a tree.  This is my first find of something other than what grows in the yard.  I am new to mycology, and haven't gotten a book yet, but I thought Id share.

What I found strange was that there was no gills under the cap.
Anyone knows what they are?
:1up:

Some kind of bolete.

Some actually are edible and choice. Others can be poisonous. None are known to be active.

Try slicing it down the middle and damaging the flesh to check for any color change.

It's best to avoid the blue bruising ones, as many can be poisonous.

One of the genera in the Boletus family.....Boletaceae

Porcinis you get in resteraunts and dryed in supermarkets are Boletus edulis......some in the group can be toxic..

Not all blueing boletus are poisonous, if I remember correctly, but considreing I wouldn't fuck with trying my hand at identifying them, I'd not advise it- thank you much for sharing your find though!

sorry, this is somewhat offtopic, but do all boletes have pores? or do some have gills as well?

all boletes have pores instead of gills, and as for that one up there, it looks almost like a kind of scaber stalk, whihc are edible, but don't eat it I might be wrong and its most certainly not psychoactive

There is one gilled bolete Phylloporus arenicola. We found one in Charleston, SC.
