PeaceCorps, or other Humanitarian Aid
    #5727898 - 06/08/06 06:42 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Hey everyone
I have been trying to do research on possible activities once I graduate from college next year. I've wanted to spend a few years in humanitarian aid efforts, and the time has come to apply.

I am interested in going to a conflict area/hotzone. I love peacecorps and its goals, but some of the nations which are being helped seem rather well off - for instance, Fiji and Tahiti are bustling tourist traps, and both rather wealthy countries because of it. I personally would rather go somewhere where I know my very presence can help provide a sense of security for the people that I'm helping. I want to make a difference. I want to help in a warzone, and be the guy without a gun. Because of this, I've also been investigating the UN's Office for Humanitarian Efforts, and the Red Cross. I'm also considering investigating a few other charities such as Doctors without Borders, etc.

I've got a strong background in computers, as well as about 10 years of job experience as a technician. I've got about 8 years of classroom Spanish experience.

Now, here is where I need some discussion - which of the programs I mentioned (or even didn't mention) would you suggest as being closest to what I want to do? Are all of the places that PeaceCorps sends people to considered "safe" zones, like the people that I've spoken with have said?

Also, have any of you had experience in PeaceCorps, or any of the other places listed above?

Finally, PeaceCorps offers deferment of loans, as does AmeriCorps, do any of the others? Information on anything save for PeaceCorps and Americorps has been scarce save for information on how to donate. I wrote to the UN and have yet to hear back a response - they probobly have bigger fish to fry anyhoo.

I hope this is the right forum, and I'd appreciate any information has about any of these organizations. Thanks so much!

American Red Cross or Salvation Army..

Look into them.

Ive done a few years of volunteer service in the US Corps programs.

Its definitely good for the soul to help others in need for a while..

Its been proposed several times over and over that people age 18 to 24 who volunteer 2 years full time in a corps program should be rewarded with a 4 year scholarship to college. Right now two years will get you two years school.

Americorps is something worthy if you want to stay in the US. Ive worked with many Americorps Vista voulenteers and they were all great people who loved what they do. Even though they had no money and worked long and hard. They all held their heads up high knowing that they were doing something great.

If you like the outdoors then you should look into some of the conservation or community corps.. Ive done everything from work at a salmon farm in Colorado with the National Comunity Civilian Corps to fight wildfires in Oregon with the California Conservation Corps.
