opium poppies?

so around my city i have just reasently noticed about 20 poppie plants in varius gardens..they all have orange flowers except for one i noticed today had a white flower can any one tell me or give me a link to help identify these
Are they active?
or are they a waist of my time?

i think you can either tell by the size of the pod if they are active or not, but im most likely mistaken. i guess the only way to find out if they were oriental (which i would bet) or p somniferum would be to harvest them, but isnt that stealing? grow some.

i second the growing idea. you can get seeds on most ethnobotanical websites.
i think growing your own shit (morning glory's, cacti...) makes for better trips and a more balanced relationship with the plant in question.
of course i probably sound rediculous to some of you.

Generally the leaves and stems of non-actives are quite hairy, while the actives are much smoother. The orange ones most likely not what you're looking for, seeds are cheap and readily available from every grocery store, but it takes a couple years to really get the hang of it. They need to be planted while its still chilly and generally take three months to flower but can be planted in the fall for next year.

I don't have any experience with that route or know of any teks for that matter but I'm quite sure they would need more serious lighting than just a window.
