Yea. I don't think something like that could ever happen in any other sport either. There's something about the game that eclipses any other competition.

Don DeLillo has this wonderful book about mob mentality and cult mentality called Mao II, and each of the four chapters begins with a disturbing photograph of some mob scene, and the most disturbing one by far are soccer fans being crushed against the netting that keeps them off the field, because all the fans behind them are surging forward. A lot of people died in that incident, I think.

Was that the Belgium disaster? I think the game was still played despite a pile of debris and bodies in the corner of the stadium. Then for several hours fans clashed with eachother and police. Wikipedia has an interesting quote on football culture..
"In Latin America the border between soccer and politics is vague. There is a long list of governments that have fallen or been overthrown after the defeat of the national team." — Luis Suarez

The Economics of Football looks like a deep take on the subject

I've been meaning to read How Soccer Explains the World, I think that's more on the Philosophical side of things though.

It's definately a fun sport once one gets into it. I always thought of it as boring, and the Simpsons parody of it (with the players doing nothing but passing the ball back and forth to the commentary of an over excited announcer) summed up how I felt about the game. But once you get into the foundation of the sport, the timed tackles, pokes, corner kicks, penalty kicks, everything about it becomes intensly exciting and it accumulates into hysteria when a goal is scored. It's amazing though that it got elected as the single most popular sport among human kind, but not surprising since all you need is an easily airborne sphere.
