P. Subbalteatus in ohio, too late in the season?
    #5727051 - 06/08/06 02:41 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

i've been reading up on mushrooms in my area, and it seems that P. Subbalteatus would be my best bet here. i live in northwestern ohio and we just had a good rain. i thought it might be a good time to see if i could find anything. i have read some conflicting reports on fruiting times though. one report says it ends in may, the other says spring through fall. does this species of mushroom fruit in the summer/late spring, especially in my area, or does it stop fruiting in may?

also, any fellow ohio pickers out there have any tips? does it only grow on manure here, or have you seen it in woody areas or on mulch? if it does only grow on manure, any tips for farm picking?

i don't think this post is against the board rules, i'm not asking where exactly to find them, just looking for some general information.

i'm new to mushroom hunting so any help would be appreciated.

It's not too late, they can be found from spring through fall as long as the conditions are right.

Hay bails, horse manure compost, grass fertilized with manure are good spots.

look for caerulipes too, they grow in ohio and there has been alot of finds this year. Do a search and you can see habitat pics and info on where to look. If you look back through the message board you will find all the posts from this year about them too, not that far back...

ok, just read up some on blue foot's. they seem to bruise easily. i'm curious as to how fast they typically take to show bruising?

also, there is not a lot of woodlands here in nw ohio. i'm wondering if they will grow on other hardwoods other than birch, beech, or maple?

Usually within a matter of a few to 10 mins.. no more than 20-30 mins usually. A lot of them usually have blue bruising already while in the habitat still.
