How does one breakthrough, and why?

Well just the other day i had my first experience with salvia, and i do know that you have to breakthrough to actually get into salvia world, more than just a distortion on our reality, and the everpreasent falling and going somewhere feeling. Well i broke through farther than that point, and well really i can't explain it, but the best i can explain it is what i saw was painted on a piece of glass or mirror and shattered, black void filling in the spaces between the shards of glass, and growing, as well as the pinprick feeling allover my body. I then came too after the the come up with the usual salvia rise feelings. We had smoked some 5x standardized out of a Gravity Bong, regular Bic lighter.
Now i was with 5 other people smoking it, all of us trying it our first times, but all of us rather close and fairly responsible. My real close friend, no prior use of psych's broke through and said he had a magical ocean of colors experience in the background of a commercial. Not sure what my other friend said, but he broke through 2x that night no prior use with psych's. But my other 2 friends that were smoking it as well, never did breakthrough, and both have had prior use with psych's, and both took some rather amazing Gravity Bong hits, they both said they got to the falling and going somewhere feeling, but never farther.
My question though is what is the purpose of breaking through, did i actually breakthrough or what? What is the reason my other 2 friends havn't broken through yet, how can i get them to breakthrough, or how can they allow themselves to breakthrough to have an experience like that of mine or more. We are planning on trying this again in the coming week or 2.

whats the point of breaking through? thats like asking whats the point of smoking salvia. Yes you broke through but you didn't go all the way. The reason your friends didn't get very far was they have a naturally higher tolerance which is pretty coming. I need a pinch of 10x my friend can smoke a bowl of 20x without feeling a thing. Also they might have just not breaking through simple as that, no explaining it. What u can do is get stronger extract, buy a torch lighter(big difference) and make sure to hold the smoke in for around 20 to 30 seconds (very important). IF they don't go there again they just got to keep trying and eventually Sally D will pay em a visit and shatter there reality. Also tell em to go into expecting to get a little high not tripped. its weird but thats how it work....i almsot forgot, dont let them stop smoking it til they dont know what a bong is. No need to stop if u havent even made it to hyperspace yet. and dont pass the bong around like smokin weed let one person go at a time.

"breakthrough" is not a physical boundary, it is only a word to describe the intensity of a trip. It can feel as an actual boundary though. It is a state that is hard to describe and everyone must have a different definition of breakthrough.
Breakthrough for me is, like you said "more than just a distortion on our reality", when I loose all connection with reality and come into a new world/universe where nothing has a connection with our normal perception of the world/reality. Time, space and normal emotions don't exist and there is no way I can think about that while I experience it. It's only after the trip that I can try to explain what it was like, but that's nearly impossible. It feels like trying to explain what the color red looks like to a blind person.
I don't know why your friends didn't have such an intense experience or breakthrough. Have you read this:

tell them to let go. I find that attachment to an outcome generally brings dissappointment, and non attachment allows the greatest results (esp. with spirit/entities like salvia, mushrooms, etc).

I am so f*cking smart but when I am there, I know I knew nothing ( like now really I do know nothing). also I do believe it's substantially different for everyone, and less of a big deal than supposed, we are just so astonished that it happenned; this element of surprise is paramount. maybe like breaking through the christmas wrapper of the present you never knew you were. blah blah blah...
