Reusing tyvek
    #5726607 - 06/08/06 12:45 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

On a bunch of jars that my friend did recently, half of them got contamed and hence he had to clean them out. A green mold had contamed about 4 quarts of potential spawn. He proceeded with cleaning the jars with dish soap thoroughly but he used tyvek under the lids of the jars. What he was wondering was whether he needs to clean the lids as well and replace the tyvek for when he reuses the jars. I thought that perhaps as long as he pressure cooks the jars immediately after loading them it wouldn't be an issue as everything would be killed in the PC. Tyvek is slightly difficult for him to obtain and not particularly cheap so reusing it would be the best option for him. Does he have to replace it or can he reuse it?

I reuse synthetic filter disks after contamination. I see no reason you can't reuse the tyvek as well. Mold spores are killed by less than boiling temps, so a spell in the PC should be sure to leave you good to go.
