No Straw for my HPoo; Hay, Nothing, Something Else?

I'm doing the WBS -> hpoo+straw thing but apparently we don't have straw available around here, only hay.
So the question for my fellow shroomie brethren...
What would be better; hay, nothing at all, or some other material to add to my hpoo?

do you have an arts and crafts store around by? maybe a hobby lobby, or other similar store? if so, i know for a fact you can use the straw wreaths they sell for DIY wreath projects.

Hpoo is basically straw itself once its aged. Isnt it just cow manure which requires straw to air it up?

Oh, ok. So the straw is a sort of ventilating agent, not nutritive?
They sell bags of this new stuff, basically expanded clay bits, which is supposed to be better than vermiculite. For the same purpose. I guess I'll just add that.
Anyone else with an opinion?

Don't use hay. Hay is the end of the stalk with the seeds, and they will contaminate very easily, being grains. Use straw, coffee grinds, coir, worm castings, compost, or a combination of any or all to cut the manure if you want. Verm is ok to cut it, but bear in mind it won't supply any food value. RR

RogerRabbit, what about just using straight-up pasteurized hpoo without any cutting agent at all?

Straw does supply more nutes to your substrate and thats why its sometimes used alone as a substrate. I would just go with verm in your hpoo. Its better than nothing at all as it retains a lot of water in your hpoo

Unfortunately, vermiculite isn't available around here so I'm using Schultz Multi-Purpose Soil Conditioner. It's basically expanded clay bits, kinda like crushed hydroton, and designed as a replacement for verm.
