Can mycelium from a dish that dried out be recovered and transferred to a new dish? I had a dish of pink oyster do this to me. It took a long time to grow, and since the dish has been incubating for months the agar dried up.

Why not pioneer this field of research by trying it out .Different fungi have different capabilities for sure but I have seen Psilocybe Cyanescens mycelium grow form being fairly dried .

The plates are surely full of spores. Just inoculate dry mycelium to new agar and hope for the best.

Cut a few small pieces and drop them into distilled water after a five minute peroxide dip. Use tyvek, polyfill, etc on the lid to filter and provide air. It takes about three weeks, and you'll see some mycelium begin to grow out into the distilled water, using what's left of the agar for food. Remove with a syringe and test for purity on a petri dish, or take your chances and go straight to grain. RR

hi RogerRabbit, the "bath" in peroxide means 90% distilled water + 10% peroxide?
i've to start to surf the psychotropic section..
Thank you.

Thanks for the advice guys!
Is the peroxide dip necessary though? I'm worried it might damage the already dry and weak mycelium. And instead of plain distilled water, wouldn't karo water be a better choice?

think of it like taking a clone. if you know the dry agar is clean maybe you can get away from doing the h202 but i would,if not use plain ho2..but don't use sweeten h2o(karo), it can cause bacteria to form before your myc get a hold.
also if you make your new agar on the wetter side you don't need to hydrate the transfer, ,
i wouldn't do the karo LC yet till you have a for sure clean isolate, or you'll never know what you'll be growing...

Correct. You don't want to use karo or any nutrients of any kind. Dip the dry tissue/agar in 3% peroxide for five minutes. This is to help neutralize any bacteria and/or any spores that are present, whether they be contaminant or mushroom. It won't hurt the dry mycelium. Transfer to plain distilled water and forget it for a few weeks. With no nutrients, the mycelium will be favored to rejuvinate and grow, using itself as the nutrient source.
This procedure works for reviving dry mushroom tissue as well. RR
