mp3 players, let's go through this again

I know there have been threads like this in the past, but times are always changing.
I'd like some help picking out a portable hard drive-based mp3 player. My requirements, from most to least important, are:
-Must use standard USB mass storage, be usable just like a portable hard drive. -No copy protection BS. -Probably looking for 10-20gb, maybe more if the price is right. -Sound quality, good EQ functionality. -Price is a big factor. -Battery life/reliable battery. -Slick control scheme like an Ipod or Zen would be nice. -Don't care about any stupid movie/photo abilities, but onscreen display for choosing songs should be good. -Aux-out or extra headphone jack would be nice.
A related question: when car stereos say they have Ipod hookups, do they mean only Apple Ipods, or do those work for other players too?
Thanks for the help, 5 shrooms for any good advice.

Check out the line of older Archos Jukeboxes. Check ebay most definitely. You could probably get a 20gb w/out video for 100-150 if not less.

I rock the Archos Gmini 220. Holds 20gigs of music. I paid $160 after rebate. The best gig/price ratio on the market.

Zen 20GB right here. The only program you need to put music on it is Windows Media Player. All my friends have had problems with their Ipods, but me I've never had one on my Zen. I paid 140 for it. I believe that's the same price for Ipod 2GB.

I like Zens, but they don't use USB mass storage. I use Linux, and apparently I'd need some program called "gnomad" to upload to it. I've heard of people actually putting Linux on Ipods, thus beating all the copy protection crap. iriver h340 looks ideal, but expensive. I'm looking into Archos and iaudio too. More suggestions are welcome, but remember the USB mass storage is requirement #1.
Thanks everyone so far.

yup, mass storage is the way to go. just plug in & drag/drop files - no media player required. that's why I liked the h3x0 series.

Anybody know anything about the car stereos with ipod hookups? Are those only for real ipods or do they work with other players?

very cool. have you visited the misticirver forums? check them out.
advice: dont bother with rockbox yet. still not entirely stable and battery life on it sucks. just load the latest korean firmware on it for video and all the other features that were left out of the US version.
