    #5724140 - 06/07/06 07:47 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

What do bad trips mean? I took shrooms for intermittingly throughout a couple of weeks. It was fucking unbelievably fun. everything was awesome, but then out of nowhwere i had two horrible trips in a row. I felt like i was going crazy and was about to have a mental breakdown. what does this say about me? what are bad trips soposed to teach you?

depends on the type of bad trip, describe more in detail

could be your heath, mentally or physically

maybe your lack of experience, too intense to handle

they could be teaching a lesson,

negative environment and bad timing

from what i've been reading "bad trips" are usually when things get too intense for a person. This can range to a number of things, seeing unexpectedthings, having to face deep problems you've been carrying with you all your life or w/e.

From what i've seen bad trips usually come from one thing shocking a person, or making them feel uncomfortable that they just want to get out of the situation, and to get out of a trip you fight what the drug does, and i find if you fight the drug or try to control it, you get sucked deeper into this bad trip because you have no control.

Personally i've seen a few messed up things while tripping but after the initial shock like when something jumps out at you from nowhere, i just relax and smile because i know there is nothing i could do to save myself if i tried. Seems like a bit of a morbid thought, but i mean it in a more passive way, like let's say the universe is going to blow up: what use is it to you if you travel to australia? (unless you wanted to see it before you died that is) why not just sit around and enjoy your last while? I've found this mentality has saved me from a few bad trips.

Reading your first post i'm not sure if i stayed on topic with that, i apologise, if part of it's pointless. These are all just my opinions btw, i have no facts or anything like that to back it up.

A lesson.

It's your job to figure out what it is though.

bad trips can mean a lot of things...what are you looking for when you trip? just having fun or using them in a spiritual way?
were you in a bad mood, a bad setting, or upset about something?
maybe you are abusing the sacred mushroom, like doing it too often. explain a little more about how you were feeling...

After all the times I have done mushrooms and don't think I have ever had a bad trip although I have had symptoms of what I hear are bad trips like wanting it to end or thinking about something in my life or about myself I don't like or just plain feel uncomfortable. Though these things are usually uncommon for me, I never really considered them a bad trip or even unbearable for that matter. I think some people who say they have really bad trips are just looking for only fun or a high, and though mushrooms are fun there is more to them than that. So these people who are only out for the fun see these negative feelings as horrible and can't take them for what they are. Then again some bad trips can be from the setting or people around but usually they are not overly hard to fix in those types of situtations though I have never had something like that myself.

Trips that go in a negative direction are, for me, catalysts for future development. They always, without fail, turn out positive in the end, no matter how dire the trip gets.

I think of it this way...

Good and bad are judgements. Many of the trips many associate as "bad" ones I have enjoyed as much as a "good" trip. I mean, I was so excited on my first "death trip". Try to not think in definites like good and bad.

I dont think anyone is overanlyzing. overanlysis is like, thinking non stop about it to the point of major stress. thinking/discussing something is merely analysis.

that aside, I think there is a definite difference between a bad trip and a difficult trip. Bad is like the FBI is knocking at your door and satan is in your pool and bugs are living underneath your skin.
However, ego loss can be difficult, but I would not call it bad at all!
Anyways, do you have any more specific details about your "bad" trips?

I've had elements of what most would consider the 'bad trip' in each of my experiences with psychedelics. A few things I've encountered that might connote negativity:

1. despair over the state of humanity and the world; a feeling that no one in the world is happy and we humans as a whole are destined for nothing more than years of suffering culminating in a mean ending

2. more specifically, despair over the neuroses, depression, strange social dynamics of people you know and care deeply about; a feeling that your interactions with people are not pure and you have no way of setting things right

3. fear over physical ailments, i.e. pronounced pain in certain organs or extremities while tripping, a feeling that the physical death of the body is imminent, etc.

4. the feeling that you've gone completely insane, usually occurring when the most intense aspects of the trip (sensual hallucinations, tremendous distortions in time, etc.) have subsided but your brain is still completely haywire

When 1, 2, and 4 on the list above have been prevalent in my trips, I have found them to ultimately beneficial, and in the come-down and the day or 2 after I feel that I have grown as a person and try to make correspondent changes (many of which I later lapse out of, or don't put the full energy into that I should have, but which still alter my perceptions of reality, i.e. 'assemblage point' for the better). When 3 occurs, which it has twice, it greatly mitigates the feeling of comfort that normally accompanies the come-down. My last trip, in particular, was marred greatly by the feeling that there was something seriously wrong with my physical body; I have still not been able to shake my concerns about this, even after a trip to the doctor.

The way I look at it, most of us have a million and one bad trips lurking inside our subconsciousness. What we get out of them is based upon how willing we are to let these trips come to the surface, and how much energy we devote in the days following 'bad trip' revelations to acting on the lessons we've learned and making real positive changes. To this end I can say I've only been marginally successful, but I feel more ready than ever to explore the depths of my unconscious in earnest.

any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

For me bad/difficult trips are more common than good ones. The consensus seems to be that resistance is a major factor in difficult trips.

so a simple rule might be

Resistance = Bad
Acceptance = good

There are certain things that can't be avoided, such as death, so you can either run screaming for the hills (resistance) or... make the most of the time you have (acceptance). The choices are always ours

If you find you are having a hard trip try looking at the underlying causes and see what role you are playing in it and above all be honest with yourself and remember that no one is judging you!

Excellent stuff! This is... uhm, EXACTLY what I might have typed.

I have discovered that weed takes my ordinary line of thought and accelerates and elevates it. I can often see how elements of my ordinary thought process are recast when I'm on weed. The thing is, if I isolate myself there's a whole new line of thought that can open up that can send me into this extremely 'paranoid' (that word just doesn't cover it) yet somehow amazing state where I understand the world perfectly as a game and everyone's aware it's a game, and I see that I somehow missed some important rite in my past that was supposed to usher me into the game. I feel that all the people I've met in my life that have bounced right off me have done this because they've seen I don't "get it" and don't want to fall into this unaware state I'm in. I feel there is absolutely nothing I can do about it because I've been unaware for too long and people just don't want to bother with me. I feel like I should try and do something but have absolutely no motivation. It's like the lowest level of self-confidence imaginable when I'm in this state. The thing is, lying there in this state for hours and just thinking thinking thinking has fundamentally changed me and made me aware of many things. Dives into that catatonic paranoid hell is actually a really healthy thing to have happened to me, I believe, because it shows me the boundaries of internal pain and how I'm able to 'happily' sit in it, even for all eternity if it was the case. And this is extremely liberating, because ultimately the sole thing that holds us back is pain/fear/despair, and if you learn about how far these things stretch and just what they're about, then you begin to see their insignificance and neutrality. You begin to believe that whatever happens you can take it. It really builds you as a person. Bad trips, if riden properly, can help make you into a very free man.

If you continuously trip and have a blast then you start having bad trips...

It might be that you are not putting the lessons of your "good trips" into your life, ignoring them. Then you continue to trip thinking that your going to have so much fun or whatever... But your subconscious is like "hey fucker I told you to quit being so wasteful and using people or stealing or whatever..."

This is what your creating inside yourself by ignoring the lessons....

Just a guess because you really didn't go into detail, but I have found this with others....

With all that written... and it's some good stuff... I would just like to add that before taking a trip you must be in the mood for it, that means... not in a bad mood but not meaning you have to be glad as fuck. Just try to "re-boot" yourself, begin as "empty" as you can, neutral.

All these terms of good and bad, as somebody wrote, don't think about them during the trip... don't hold on to anything specific, just go with the flow! Everything is in your head.

You will have the time afterwards to concentrate on what the trip meant for you. And in the end it comes to each and everyones interpretation.

:smile2:  :peace:
