redwood contains tannic acid, a chemical that inhibits the growth of some fungi and bacteria. It exudes this chemical to get rid of competitors fighting for the same environment. Our friendly psilocybes can't grow in such forests as a result.
One good place to look is near Humboldt State. However, I highly doubt anything is poppin right now as the weather has not been conducive of growth for the past several months.

Well, That just means I don't have to look where there are redwood. I am going to santa Cruz, so I will be near the coast. I know there are all types of diff. trees in that area. The Snta Cruz Fungus Fair website has a species index that can bee seen here: http://collectivesource.com/scff/2000/species-list.html
It says Cyanescns and Azurescens and also amanita's. So now, my question is:
Where Do I look for any of these types?
What kind of trees to look for?
Conditions?
thanx for any help

you guys, you guys you guys. at the risk of tooling myself out to you guys, like some fuckin idiot that has nothing better to do, i'm gonna try to help a little. a little. i doubt you will ever find azurescens there, unless you find it where someone has cultivated it......it is only known to occur naturally in an extremely limited environment on the coast of oregon, way farther north than s.c. i dont know who claims theyve been found there, or if it's true. anyone is free to dispute this, but i would bet money on it. then to cyans. highly likely to occur all over the friggin place. try mulched areas. they like lots of broken up woody debris. they like some coastal shrubs. look under shrubs. thats where ive found all of mine. if you do a tiny fucken amount of research, you'll find out which shrubs they like the most. also, you are likely to find several other species in your area, including psilocybe semilanceata. the reason im such an ass is that lots of people have put time and effort into assembling information here for you to access for free, FOR FREE!! and you dont seem to have the decency to even peruse it. just look around, try reading some. or some more, learning never stops. there are far too many little brown mushrooms for you to just ask and receive. in the process of half-assed discovery you're likely to get seriously poisoned. the information you ask for is simple. that's why this site is here, and the many others that are linked thru here. get ready, the rain is coming, and so are the shrooms!!!!!!!!!!! you guys should have no problem if you do some picture lookin... then take some, and post here, well help.
jeje... good job there puttin' me in my place
and you can believe i'll be gettin' some books on the subject before i even think about injestin' any of my finds. i'd like to get a digi-cam as well, but i don't kno if the funds will allow for that quite yet
thanks for the advice!

dude. i deleted that hoping noone read it. it's hard to be an ass. last night i couldn't explain to my girl why it was important for me to go off on someone i didn't know. anyway, it looks like you've compiled a list and are gonna learn some habitat stuff. the thing is, it is WORK to find all this shit out. just askin for it is, well, askin for it. i mean no harm, i only want you to realize all that is involved. pholiotinas, galerinas, cortinarii--these mushrooms are rampant in some psilocybe habitats, and have killed many a shroomer without the motivation for proper research. for those that would only take the shortcuts, i would suggest cultivation. the risk of death is VERY REAL, especially for those who expect the info to be handed to them. i wish you luck!!! remember, if you do find something, and have no mycologist to id it, come here, give us all the pertinent details, and take some halfway decent photos, and you should be allright, we try our damndest nopt to let anyone get sick, or die. that is my reason for being so hot..... peace
