Ive found several colonies of pan semiovatus recently, and up untill today i didnt think they were edible. I thought i would give them one last research hour, but this time in a real mushrooms field guide. out of curiosity, i looked for semiovatus and all in all I found these same shrums, they are posibly pan. semiovatus, but it also said there are so many varieties of semiovatus, and pan's, that its hard to even destinquish some apart. and suprisinly it said semiovatus were edible, and also that there have been several accounts of "poisioning" (psylocin poisoining that is) from this shroom. well this gave me some insentvie to try them, if they arent actually poisonous, then theres nothing to lose. im going to repost after i eat these, and let everyone know what happens..

Panaeolus semiovatus is a nonactive and nonpoisonous mushroom. If eaten, they are not a choice edible mushroom. Probably not even mediocre.
I have heard reports of people consuming nonactive Panaeolus mushrooms, and they get stomach upset and diarrhea from them, and not trip either.
Did you find them in horse dung?
Do you live in Vermont?

These are Panaeolus antillarum. THey use to be both Panaeolus semiovata and Panaeolus semiovatus, and a few more names not used in years..
They are not psychoactive and they are not really edible. Except for a gagging effect on the throat.
They are not even meaty enough.
This species has also gone through many name changes over the past century or named by different mycologists with different names at the same time.

Here are some larger ones, ocassionally found. See how the stem of one broke. This is how fragile this species is. If you were to flick the shroom stem while in your hand, the mushroom would break up into several pieces of caps and/or stems.

Some guide books often refer to some species of the genera of Panaeolus as possessing hallucin0ogenic properties or have psilocine/psilocybine in them. Only a few of them do.
Some they label incorrectly as psilocybine, psilocybine latent and no psilocybine.
But as a whole, in the late 1940s, nuumerous mushroom poisonings occured in Australia and the mushrooms believed to be the cause of the dysphoria were referred to as the "hysteria fungus." Later, it was determined by mycologist a that the actual 'hysteria fungus' were species of Copelandia ( most likely C. cyanescens), and not Panaeolus antillarum.
Even a good amateur shroom hunter can distinguish the two species.

The confusion comes from some scientic papers that incorrecly identified the mushrooms they were testing, word got spread around and thats why that "info's" in a lot of books.
As everyone says - proper ID is very important.
