Hey all, about 2 years ago I got a pod from myco-tek to grow mushrooms. It has been sitting in the box for all of this time and I finnally wanna just get this show on the road.
I have read several teks and I understand exactly what I have to do, however the place I am growing is cold right now. One day the temp will be 80 the next it will be 60...
I need some alternate ways to heat up the area so it will be optimal for my grow, and alsos ome ways to determine the temperature of this area. It will most likely be grown in a very small closest so I am not sure if a heater is too much heat that will cause a fire (really don't wanna take that chance)..
I read a little about a heating pad method but not sure if that is safe....
Also wanted to know if I should go ahead and use the POD I have, or if I should build my own bigger ghetto setup and use that..
Also will the pod keep the temperature up in there or just the humidity?

Okay, I HAVE a heating blanket, so do you suggest wrapping my jars inside of the blanket and just leaving them for awhile? Also I need a suggestion for when I put them IN the pod, because I can't control the heat in the air with a heating blanket...

you should really try and find a more stable environment, or at least control the one u have, if it s a closest it should fairly easy to manipulate to ur likings

its not perfect but it'll work. mushrooms grow outside in places where temperatures flucuate similarly.
an idea is to get a reptile heating pad. these are pretty low output, they are flat and thin and usually have adhesive on them for sticking to the underside of a terrarium... so stick it to the under side of your pod. they're inexpensive (less than $20) and use very little electricity. put it on a timer (an el cheapo $5 lamp timer is perfect) so that it kicks in at night when the temp typically starts dropping and turns off come morning. clip one of those (also very cheap) lights onto the rim of your pod pointing down towards it and it will give you some heat from above, and use the same timer to turn your light on at night. between the two you'll keep 'em warm at night and they'll be ok during the day.

you have to be very careful with heating pads and heating blankets because it can dry out your substrate.

If it's in a closet, small heaters work fine. Use a small househould (safety+) heater and get a thermometer/hygrometer at Radioshack (they have ones that work well and are inexpensive;I think I got a main unit(thermo/hygro) and 2 remotes for under $50)
Just make sure not to put too much heat in there. Regulate everything and play with the levels of the environment before you start incubation.

That's the answer. You need to leave it as is, or heat the air in the room, not the terrarium. If you heat the terrarium, it will draw moisture from your substrate in order to use it as condensate on the sides of the terrarium. I neither heat my house in the winter nor cool it in the summer(mild climate), so I experience fluctions in temperature too. It's not really a big deal. RR
