achieving an even substrate w/straw
    #5722879 - 06/07/06 01:34 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

hi,

wondering what the best method is of creating a nice even substrate with straw? i've seen some posts mentioning weighting down the straw during colonization, others advocating snipping off loose bits of straw, and some suggesting gently pressing down the substrate before applying casing mixture.

i'm assuming that by 'even', it is meant to be perfectly flat, (horizontally) and consistently textured.

the search function has been very helpful in the past, let me know if i've overlooked some information.

thanks

with straw you can lay it even and weight it down.
use a screen or chicken wire or some such material that the
mycelium can breathe through and evenly weight it with a
brick or a workout-type weight on top of the screen.
not too heavy, but enough to hold it well.

remove screen and weight upon full colonization.
the substrate should be knit together well and stay even.

thanks for the speedy reply.

is it necessary to allow airflow to the straw? my concern is that a screen and bricks might block FAE to the mycelia.

i'm also assuming i should put the screen and bricks on top of a perforated sheet of plastic?
