Yea i was the one who was mistaken, Its tough to come accross Trich cacti up here in canada. So I have very limited experiance growing them.

They probably will die. You can see a dead dried up rotted one in that guys pic. I think they will die because they are not supposed to have that much contact with the soil and will absorb too much water and rot.

The pupping is most likely a last ditch effort to survive.

Pupping is always an effort to survive.

They can get easily over a foot tall, and you can cut them off and replant. Other times, they'll live quite a while. The part in the soil will callouse and dry out, and not just rot away instantly.

The ones in the photos were completely dried up. Effectively 'dead' besides a nice root system. But it wasn't rotted, and there wasn't root rot.

I'd like to give some advice but I've never tried this method because it doesn't seem practical in cultivation to me. Although I like how it emulates what would happen in the wild.
