Hey everyone, I've got a question for ya. First off, I UTFSE but came up with nothing, and for some reason my password doesn't work at the Nook. So, I turn to you, ethnobotanical gardeners.
I just got a lovely center cut of T. Pachanoi, and it's nicely calloused at both ends. I have a few trichs growing vertically, but I'd like to plant this one horizontally as I've seen in some pics. What's the best method to do that? Or is it even not recommended?
I'd like for it to lay horizontally in the dirt like a log, and eventually pup upwards. I think it would look different and be fun. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Yep, it will work perfectly fine.
Just put it around half, perhaps a little more, under the soil. Obviously, be *very* cautious about watering. The whole thing underneath will eventually callouse, so just be patient.
Eventually, you should get at least one pup at each end. Make sure you use a nice big pot. Roots will grow not only out of each end, but all along the middle.
And post a log of your log.

Any other advice anyone (not that Mr. Koolio's advice didn't help)? I'm going to be planting it in a mix of soil, sand, and perlite. Should I keep it in the shade and slowly introduce it to light? All my plants are indoor, but seem to do pretty well.

Compile everything you learn about cacti and then send it to me so I can know too, without having to learn it on my own of course. Thanks.

Cool, I'll start that project this evening. In fact, I'll just mail you all my cacti and a huge sack of dirt.

See folks, that is why Dr. Dennings is the shroomery member of the month on the main page. Because, I mean, who else would do such a thing. Anyway Burke, I was just playing. But someone else would probably actually need it. Let someone else win this contest. Thanks

You're too much, paradis. This isn't a contest, and I'm not sending out anything. I would if I could, but that's not the case. I'm just looking for advice so I don't kill the precious few cacti I have.
I do like the title Dr. Dennings, though.

I ended up doing this with a very stretched and thinned tip section of a young cacti.
I had cut the thin part off in order to use the thick 'normal' part for a graft.
Figured i would experiment with the tip.
So I cut it in half. Took one end rooted normally.
The other was layed down horizontal.
After about a month roots have started forming from both callused ends.
One pup is now starting to form a couple 'nodes' from the center.
I need to get a camera......maybe i can borrow one, then i;ll post some pics.
I have determined these are very very hardy cacti to work with I think you would really have to TRY to kill one before it would die......

Cool, thanks for the story.
Here's another question: When I plant it sideways and cover half of it with dirt, should half of the callous be above the ground? Or should I cover the ends and just have the skin exposed? I hope I stated that question clearly. Not that you guys are dumb, I just have a bad way of wording things sometimes.

Leave the half ends exposed. They'll pup.

Not sure if there is a definitive proper amount that should be buried or not.
I pretty well just layed it on the top of the soil. Gently nestled it in maybe 1/16 of an inch.

For the sake of root development, I'd certainly go a bit deeper than that. But if it works, it works.

To do something different, and because you get at least one new column coming out of each end this way, and a huge base of rootage (if you put it more than 1/16" under).

I planted it this evening, in a mix of 50/50 cactus soil and perlite, with perlite and stones in the bottom inch or so of the pot. To plant the cutting, I just kind of nestled it into the dirt until it was almost halfway in. Then I placed a thin layer of rocks all around it. If anyone has any more advice, I'd love to hear it. Now, the pictars:

As you can see, the ribs are a little sucked in, but I'm reluctant to water it yet. Does anyone know when I should give it it's first drink? Any other info? Thanks, guys.
